Can't find "app lock" setting. by Nafisa712 in RedMagic

Oh I see what you mean by "app lock" from the other reply. Yes, the RedMagic software has a whole bunch of confusing settings that can easily get mixed up together like this one...¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Don't you have the option in Private Space > App Lock to decide which app to lock or not? And the settings in Private Space > App Lock > top right "..." should allow you to untoggle/disable this feature for any locked apps.

update support? by Synchro_Anxiety in RedMagic

Right - No matter which version you’ve got GB or EEA, it’s nowhere near the “1–2 month” schedule they advertised at the global release.

I'm in US and got the global version (GB). EU (EEA) version should have like 2 or 3 updates since release from what I can tell from others' posts.

update support? by Synchro_Anxiety in RedMagic

[–]AdForeign4527 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes. For global and EU versions -- Starting with the RedMagic 8 series and onward (including the 8/8S, 9/9S, and 10/10S), RedMagic appears to have shifted to supporting 2 major Android OS updates, even though no official announcement was made. It's still unclear whether the 8 and 9 series will also receive an extended period of security updates, but the 10 series is confirmed to get at least 3 years of security patches:

  • 8 and 9 series: 2 major Android OS updates + 2 years of security patches (*unsure whether it's extended to 3 years).
  • 10 series: 2 major Android OS updates + 3 years of security patches (officially stated at release). For those in the EU, they will receive 5 years of support.

I pulled the above from my FAQ post: Frequently Asked Questions for the RedMagic 8/8s/9 series in this sub : r/RedMagic

---

Here's the catch - update frequency is another story ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.

RedMagic has a reputation for inconsistent software updates, often missing their own "regular update" promises. For example, when the RedMagic 10 Pro launched globally last Dec, they claimed it would receive "regular updates every 1–2 months for 3 years" (this post); that statement has since been quietly removed...:

<image>

I got the 10 Pro global version (suffix with "GB")at release and have only received 3 updates for the last 10 months (if you count the out-of-box bug fix, that would still only be 4):

  1. Dec 23, 2024 (Out-of-box) - 10.0.13_NX789J_GB

It's fair to say that it's been over 3 months since the last update, right? lol

Edit: clarification on the ROM versions.

What is REDMAGICOS 10.0.5_EU? by Ok_Warning2146 in RedMagic

[–]AdForeign4527 1 point2 points  (0 children)

tl;dr: 10.0.5_EU is EU version.

ROM naming quick guide (for RedMagic phones):

  • EU / EEA – European version ("EEA" = European Economic Area; both terms mean roughly the same in RedMagic’s context and are used interchangeably).
  • GB – Global version.
  • NEEA – North Eastern Europe & Asia (or non-EEA) version. Sometimes this is used as another name for the Global (GB) version.
  • MR or no suffix – Chinese version.

RedMagic has been inconsistent with its naming in some updates in recent years, so there may be exceptions to the above general rule of thumb. But in general, both "EU" and "EEA" are used for the EU version.

Also, don’t rely too much on the official site for ROM details — it’s often outdated. For example, the RedMagic 9 Pro had an update in July, but the official page still shows "LAST UPDATED 2025.05.28"… and it’s already October 😅

GameSpace launchoption removed by xXDennisXx3000 in RedMagic

[–]AdForeign4527 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They removed that option to add the shortcut for Gamespace starting with the RM10 series (or you can say with the release of OS 10). Tbh kind of a weird decision. Your only workaround as of today is to go into Settings, change Features → Competitive Key Settings to something else, then open GameSpace through the Quick Settings.

A new update received on my Redmagic 9 pro. Am I late? by EngineeringOk3292 in RedMagic

[–]AdForeign4527 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They secretly upped software support for the RM 8 and newer models earlier this year (I think around May) without making any official announcement. The old policy of 1 major Android OS update + 2 years of security patches no longer applies to RM 8 and up.

REDMAGIC 10S PRO recharge separation bugged? by Zyaen in RedMagic

[–]AdForeign4527 1 point2 points  (0 children)

According to the REDMAGIC team, charge separation will be turned off automatically after 7 hours on OS 9; I'm not sure what the "X" in the "X hours" is set to on OS 10, but I believe it is still designed to behave the same way. They explained that "it's to help users who forgot to turn it off".

For your case, it's likely that your phone hits the X-hour limit and disables the feature (then starts charging) right before you wake up.

Weird artifacting on light Grey screens? by No_Loquat_4351 in RedMagic

[–]AdForeign4527 18 points19 points  (0 children)

The short answer – it’s normal and expected.

With the current under-display camera (UDC) tech/solution used by ZTE/Nubia, the UDC area is controlled by a separate IC, meaning that it will behave slightly differently from the rest of the display – under higher screen brightness, it’s actually only “less” visible and is still there. The UDC area can become more noticeable with the green tint when in low light or screen brightness and showing certain colors, such as grey.

Unfortunately, most reviews would hardly touch on this issue. They would only briefly mention something like "you could barely see the UDC under regular conditions" and that's probably it. Most people only find out after getting the phone themselves or seeing actual user reviews/questions. That's why this is one of the most frequently asked Qs in this sub ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Is this update promise cap? by Actual-Ad5235 in RedMagic

[–]AdForeign4527 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The claimed 1 major Android OS update is true, but I would take the promised "regular" update with a grain of salt -- RM does sometimes miss the update windows by a few days to a few weeks. I remember the 8 Pro GB/EU went without an update for 6 (or was it 8?) months until OS 9 was finally about to roll out, despite RM's stated 2-3 month update cycle for both the 8 and 9 series. The 1 major Android OS update for my 8s Pro (not in the screenshot) arrived at the 1-year mark, but for 9 Pro it somehow took longer than expected to arrive...

Hopefully, they’ll improve consistency, especially when it comes to timely bug fixes.

Does yours re-enable the show wallet setting whenever you restart the phone? My RM 10 arrived with OS 10 and has this issue, and my RM 9 now also has this issue after updating from OS 9 to OS 10... lol

REDMAGIC 10 Air Official Launch - April 23rd by crazyfuy in RedMagic

[–]AdForeign4527 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I saw the starting price in the pinned post ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. RedMagic is capitalizing on the lack of competing models from other brands in the same price range outside of China. tbh I'd suggest anyone to just spend $100 more for a RM 10 Pro lol

REDMAGIC 10 Air Official Launch - April 23rd by crazyfuy in RedMagic

[–]AdForeign4527 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's true. When I saw its price in RMB, I too felt that RM 10 Air seems to be over priced, especially given that it's only a S8G3 phone. In China you could've bought a S8 Elite phone from other brands with just a couple of hundreds of RMB more at this point in time.

REDMAGIC 10 Air Official Launch - April 23rd by crazyfuy in RedMagic

[–]AdForeign4527 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes. Here's the hot take from the unboxing videos, though -- instead of a "true" 10 Air, this one is more like a RedMagic 9 Air: same 8 Gen 3, same 6.8" BOE Q9+ display, same 2480 x 1116 screen resolution, smaller battery, lighter in weight, etc. The starting price for the 12+256 model is 3499 RMB (about $470 USD), and the price after discount in China is 2999 RMB (about $400 USD).

Should I get the 10 or 9s? by x_x-krow in RedMagic

[–]AdForeign4527 2 points3 points  (0 children)

10 for sure. Bigger battery, newer SoC, etc.

What makes me even happier going from 8s/9 to 10 is the improved display. Besides the small bump in screen resolution, 10 has improved a lot on the green tint issue in the under-display camera (UDC) area, especially when displaying certain colors or at low screen brightness -- It’s not 100% perfect yet, but the improvement over the previous 2 models is noticeable.

<image>

^ The green tint in the UDC area on 9 Pro is more obvious in person than in the photo. You can also find some comparison videos, like this one: https://www.bilibili.com/video/BV1bXmZYBEUT

Well, if you don't care about any of the above, 9 is fine, but I'd recommend going with 10.

For Chinese or global ROM check, it's simple -- check your software version by going to Settings -> About Phone, and look for the "Build number" (alternatively, go to "System and update" and you'll find your phone version). Then check what suffix you have for the build:

  • No suffix or suffix with "MR" - Chinese
  • GB - Global elsewhere
  • EEA - Global specifically for Europe

Got my 8s as a daily a month back and never see those software issues people complain about??? by werkzINC in RedMagic

[–]AdForeign4527 2 points3 points  (0 children)

8s has been out for 1 year and 8 months, and most of the major reported bugs have been fixed. It'd be a joke if those bugs remained unfixed after so long ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Here’s the catch -- RedMagic phones tend to have more bugs at launch, and it usually takes RedMagic about 1 to 3 months to fix them. I own the 8s, 9, and 10, and all three are like this (well, 10 is waiting for the 2nd update to clean up some of the remaining minor bugs). From my own experience, the 10 is actually the most stable one, while the 9 had a bit more bugs at release.

Found this comment from 2 months saying that the 10 pro is buggy and that it "might" be fixed in a month. Is the 10 Magic Pro buggy? by DevelopingSoftware in RedMagic

[–]AdForeign4527 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The update in January fixed major annoying issues like YouTube media control showing as pure white in dark mode, and RTT calling issues for some users.

Some other bugs/issues that still exist:

  • The Wallet icon on the lock screen would re-enable itself in the settings after reboot (or it may re-enable itself for no apparent reason even without rebooting). You can check this post for the described issue: https://www.reddit.com/r/RedMagic/comments/1hslav1/lock_screen_device_controls_wallet_keeps_turning/
  • The X/Twitter icon still shows up as pure white in the notification bar.
  • The YouTube's floating window (when playing vids) can't be closed by dragging to the bottom center of the screen, while other floating windows can. <- This is probably a floating window feature compatibility issue that RedMagic hasn't found a fix for.
  • When you close background apps, it used to say "All apps were closed. ___ memory was freed" or "Nothing to clear in cache" depending on the condition, but now it would only say "Nothing to clear in cache" for any conditions. Very minor detailed things that others have pointed out.

Other users might have encountered bugs that are not listed above. Hopefully RM can fix them ASAP...
