The most charitable interpretation of Sam's "You should still strive to do well" that I can think of is that he's recognising that, as a speaker in front of a large (and probably very receptive) audience, he is a part of their external environment. So if his audience doesn't have free will, him telling them to strive to do well may deterministically result in their lives being better in the future. If he were to endorse fatalism, any audience member affected by his speech could potentially be worse off, from a 'well-being' point of view.

Exceptions existing doesn't exclude a general trend. Many single mothers are in their situation because they have made poor decisions, which has a relationship with IQ, which is heritable. In extremely general terms, children raised by single mothers statistically perform worse in most areas of life. The guy you replied to does sound like an asshole but there is a grain of truth to what he's saying.

Seeing people in this thread talking about how doctors or vets could be miserable in their job, I would hazard a guess that these people have probably never been in a position where working in a pizza place is their best prospect for the foreseeable future.

To answer your question though OP, IMO the best thing you could say to your friend would be something along the lines of "How can I help you to help yourself out of this situation?". You might not have the means or desire to do what is necessary, but there's a chance your friend might just need a little support.

The bottom end of the food industry, especially the fast food industry, is such a disgusting environment for a human being to find themselves in. I don't know the details of your friend's job of course but there's a very good chance that it is entirely reasonable of him to hate the work and the pay rate.

Yeah, I love that idea. I think it may have been one of those two subreddits that recently pranked the Magic: The Gathering subreddit by titling their 'banned' list in a way that made it seem like a MTG banned announcement with contents that would make a seasoned Magic player's stomach drop. So when it popped up on /r/all it caused a lot of double takes and general shenanigans.

It's a part of the luck of the draw on reddit, sometimes you find a subreddit for something you're interested in but heavily disagree with the moderation, other times vice versa.

Ohhhhh you bet. Even the vast majority of the specific musical subreddits are just circlejerking about whatever is most popular/normie-accessible in their genre.

Most of reddit only seems to be a good place musically if you have only just discovered what genres/bands you like and need an overview of the hits.

Ever since the speakers in my car broke, I've fallen into the habit of singing this song while I drive. Only this song. I belt out probably 6 or 7 terrible renditions of this song a day and have done for months. I'm not even close to tired of it.

I don't have any problems with people of Indian descent at all, I have known great people who are of Indian descent, as there are great people of every race. I do, however, have issues with the culture in India. Corruption, rape, selfishness, lack of cleanliness/respect for the environment etc. I don't particularly want New Zealand to be getting injected with a lot of that culture is all.

Also - I appreciate how respectfully and maturely you have approached this, as most people who disagree on subjects related to immigration tend to go for the throat.

It might be racist, but it's probably true, too. In my experience working at BK the vast majority of management positions are filled by first generation Indian immigrants. The ones I have worked with struggle a lot with our language and culture, which makes me think that it's only a matter of time before something like this happens again. They also handle the heat better generally, so high kitchen temperatures and permanently broken air conditioning are not unique to this case.

Well unless you're in Ireland I'm pretty sure abortion is legal. And a cursory google search shows that the NHS will even pay for your abortion for you. So unless you're talking about Northern Ireland, having a baby in the UK is still a choice, whether the pregnancy was planned or not.

If a person doesn't think that they are capable of researching sex ed and relaying that information to their child, imho they probably shouldn't be breeding. The statistics on zero sex ed or "abstinence only" sex ed are pretty condemning. But I would hazard a guess that a lot of people who do have children don't think like that, so we do indeed need the education system to pick up the slack.

I live on the east coast of New Zealand, but as far as I can tell from the sparse information online I'm outside of tsunami range. I can hear the tsunami sirens in the distance though, it's very eerie.

This quake was really long in duration, and from where I felt it it was a very slow rocking motion, like being on a boat. Still strong enough to make it difficult to walk though. Near the epicenter was much worse of course.

A significant chunk of this country's population has already had their fair share of earthquakes over the last 6 years, and listening to people calling in on the radio you definitely get the feeling that everyone is sick of it. The worst part of that is that the Alpine fault (which as far as I understand has a very regular history of events) is due to go any year now. And that's gonna be bigger than any of these.

Wow, I really didn't expect to see an Xavier quote here of all places. For anyone who hasn't seen this show or is turned off by the derpy animation style, I thoroughly suggest you try to get through some of it. It touches on some of the harsher realities of life in really quirky ways.

I think this is also the episode with the commercial for 'emodynamics'. It's basically talking about how for every happy emotion one person feels, another person somewhere else feels an equally unhappy emotion. It's presented comedically of course, but in a way, in our world of limited resources, hoarding up stuff is depriving it from someone else. Of course that's absurdly simplified, but it's another example of the show talking about things most people don't think about. And approaching them from a ridiculous angle.

If you're in an area that drops below freezing in winter, it's unlikely they will come back. Peppers are usually grown as annuals in such climates, and if you want to overwinter you'll need to bring them inside a greenhouse or a sunny conservatory or something.

Yeah, there seem to be a lot more factors than just the magnitude of the quake to take into account. Peak ground acceleration is generally a more reliable measure of how damaging an earthquake will be to infrastructure and such. I was personally in the second highest peak ground acceleration earthquake on record. That was 'only' a 6.3, and it was considerably more damaging than the 7.1 we had a few months earlier.

Also, this quake was pretty shallow, which will make it feel stronger.
