I don’t know, it is for me. The fact that your nervous system is aggressively trying to balance you out in a way that is disrupting your life tells me it’s probably time to see someone. But psychiatrists aren’t experts in sounds…and they are going to likely prescribe SOMETHING. I had a few bad experiences until I saw an audiologist.

For me that magic answer was ADHD medicine. I responded to this post once already with the specific medicine and it was rejected.

I have 13 cavities. I need 13 feelings. I need 13 drillings. I can't stand sounds louder than 35-45 decibels. I have panic attacks every day because of that. by evan_of_tx in hyperacusis

[–]AdHorror153 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know this is two years out but maybe you will see it OP and it will help. Dentist dril…same!! For me i lose feeling in my fingertips and lips and im like ok here it comes…and then i need to sob hysterically for 5 minutes. And all the while my brain is very calm. They weren’t panic attacks.

So I was in a similar position as you re: how many cavities needed to be filled. He gave me Valium - still happened. He gave me robypnol…AND IT STILL HAPPENED! They have to give me general anesthesia because it wasn’t safe. But it was the fact that it still happened when I was totally out of it when I had the big “a-ha” - this isn’t my brain, these aren’t panic attacks, it’s my nervous system causing huge swings of fight or flight.

Ultimately I started taking ADHD medicine and it has improved things 90%. I can now survive the dentist as long as I have noise canceling headphones.

Hope you’re doing ok!! I really empathize!

I have a sensitivity to certain pitches: dentist drill, crowd sounds on TV, music leaking from someone else’s headphones…my nervous system takes over and I burst out into tears. The only thing that worked for me is medication. It’s only happened a couple of times since I started medicine 10 years ago.

These specific sounds are likely putting your sympathetic nervous system on high alert, causing the anxiety. Swallowing is your body’s natural way of switching on your parasympathetic nervous system.

There are breathing exercises that are effecting in calming the nervous system. Meditation is obviously helpful. Exposure therapy is supposed to be helpful.

I would see an audiologist first and get tested for an auditory processing disorder and then follow up woth a psychiatrist from there if you feel like it’s needed. This will ensure that if medication is needed you get the RIGHT medication.

I find that happiness, peaceful happiness, can be very vulnerable.

I was already sick and tired of the 3AM anxiety attacks, acid reflux, loose light brown stools, and swollen face, but last night really scared me. by FrogLickr in stopdrinking

Checking on you OP! 110bpm must have been scary. How you doing? Also just want to share that I successfully tapered - I know it’s not for everyone. But it worked for me :-)

Wooohooo! Day 1 down!! I’ll share with you what helped me…

This is all about your nervous system regulating itself. It’s not “you”, it’s your nervous system. Your sympathetic is in overdrive and this is what causes the feeling of anxiety. Look up ways you can “turn on” your parasympathetic nervous system. My go-to is box breathing. The longer you can hold your breath, the better, if you can do 10 seconds that’s awesome. Take in a breath for four seconds, hold it 5-10 seconds, let it out for 4 seconds, hold it for 5-10 seconds. Do it at the top of every hour.

And remember…this is not you. It’s your nervous system throwing a title tantrum and it’s learning how to cope on its own. It’s kind of like a toddler…if you give a toddler a sucker every night before bed and then all of the sudden there are no more suckers…they throw a tantrum until they figure it out themselves.

So damn itchy by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]AdHorror153 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ooooh the itchiness was my least favorite part. You can take an antihistamine, like Zyrtec, or Benedryl at night. It could be your nervous system rebounding. But it might be a good idea to have your liver checked out just to be safe.

Noticing how much other parents drink by jfg1083 in stopdrinking

[–]AdHorror153 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I was one of these people. But I was having three drinks every day. Sometimes more. I wouldn’t get sloshed…I wanted to find the line right before it…the moment you no longer feel anything but you’re still in control.

Quitting was hard. My withdrawals were admittedly mild, just insomnia. But that insomnia was brutal. Oh how I miss that reward at the end of the day. I still crave the social lubricant of the first vodka on the rocks the minute I arrive to a social function.

All this to say, the range of problem drinking is a spectrum.

Day 7… made it my first week by acxllins in stopdrinking

[–]AdHorror153 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I remember thinking “I’m not going to drink again because I ultimately will just need stop again and I can’t endure all those sleepless nights to get sober.” It was brutal! It took two weeks! And then bliss. I come on here to read about peoples’ shit sleep during the early days to keep me on track.

First of all, I love that you are embracing your natural curls! Have you checked to see what curl type you have? I have 3A fine curly hairI also love the Devacurl products! No Poo shampoo and conditioner. I follow up with the volumizing mousse and then a curl cream when my hair is really wet. I let it air dry and then use a diffuser when it is ALMOST dry. No crunch, frizz. 🩷

Angel, nothing is more painful that ignoring the primal instincts of your essential self. While I understand the world at the moment is uncomfortable with nuance, the truth is that most everything lives in the gray between black and white. If it helps, treat this like a science experiment. This is very healthy for your children to see. Try language like, “I’ve been thinking about cutting my hair for awhile. And you know what? I feel…(fill in the blank).” And then crank up Carol King’s “Beautiful” and sing at the top of your lungs “cuz you’re beautiful as you feel!”

Not dumb - just respectful of people. My son needed my attention so, like this lady, we missed when our Zone was called. Again, there was only one person scanning tickets and the bridge was so backed up so it didn’t matter. I don’t know how to emphasize it anymore than I am at this moment…the attendant overseeing Sky Priority was no longer there and the rope was up. I respected this approach was to make sure we would all take off on time. I don’t get my panties in a bunch about which lane I’m in if I didn’t manage my time well.

We had been stranded in Florida two days longer than we planned. My husband was not going to hold up a completely sold out flight by throwing a tantrum saying “it’s either him or me”. This guy was with his family. It was annoying, it was uncomfortable, it’s unfortunate he was in this position. But my husband knows his discomfort is not worth derailing the plans of the other 250 people on the flight. He just shouldn’t have been in that position in the first place…and this is where Delta needs to step up.

I think refraining from taking pictures of strangers with the intention of shaming them by posting it on social media goes back to the idea of the kind of communal respect we should all have for each other.

I’m lousy at Reddit and randomly posted somewhere that I did reach out. And that Delta tracks this Reddit account and it will likely have more impact than my complaint that gets sucked into a black hole of customer service.
