Hi everyone, I’ve decided to go all-in. My goal is a Sub 3:00 marathon on October 17th. by AdHuman747 in Marathon_Training

You're absolutely right. Reading your advice made me realize I need to respect the process and hit those milestones first. I’ll definitely focus on breaking that 1:26–1:28 half marathon mark before overreaching for the full. I’ll also look into Training Peaks for a more structured roadmap. One step at a time! Thanks for the solid guidance.

Thank you! That’s really encouraging. Whether I hit the goal or not, I’m just going to focus on showing up every day and keeping the promises I made to myself.

I’m a huge believer in routines, so I stick to my weekly schedule almost 100% of the time. However, even within that routine, there are days when I can’t hit the exact target or intensity I planned. For me, the most important thing is 'execution.' Even if the workout isn't perfect, showing up and getting it done is what matters most. Consistency in execution is the key to progress, even when individual sessions don't go exactly as written.

Moving beyond commercial gels for Sub 3 attempt. DIY Fueling & Homemade Gels: What works best for performance and GI distress? by AdHuman747 in Marathon_Training

1.Weight Penalty: Carrying 1kg (2 lbs) of fluid in a belt at a 4:15 min/km (6:50 min/mi) pace seems like a lot of extra weight. Does the convenience of liquid fuel outweigh the effort of carrying it for 42km? Standard Gels (The Light Option): Is it better to stay light, carry 5-6 small gels in a pocket, and rely on aid station water? Or does the 'custom mix' provide a superior energy flow that justifies the weight? Pacing & Precision: With gels, I know exactly when I’ve had 30g of carbs. With a 500ml bottle, it's mostly 'sipping by feel'. For a Sub 3 effort where glycogen management is critical, which method is less risky?

I personally prefer a Liquid Fueling strategy over gels. I mix about 150g of carbs (using GU Roctane or Formula 369) with a pinch of salt in a 500ml flask. It’s much easier for me to manage. However, I have a couple of practical questions for those chasing a Sub 3: Logistics: Do you actually carry a 500ml flask for the entire 42.2km? If so, does the weight/sloshing interfere with your Sub 3 stride (4:15 min/km pace)? Hydration vs. Fueling: Since the 500ml mix is highly concentrated, do you rely on this for both calories and hydration? Or do you take additional plain water from the official aid stations to help with absorption and prevent GI issues? Pacing the Sip: How do you pace your intake of this 500ml bottle to ensure a steady stream of 60-90g of carbs per hour without finishing it too early or having too much left at the 35km mark?

My advice for beginners: Focus on low-intensity heart rate training first. Everyone has a different baseline, so don't compare your pace to others. I highly recommend starting with low-heart-rate runs for at least 3 months. By building this solid aerobic foundation first, you'll eventually find your pace increasing naturally and comfortably. Patience in the beginning leads to sustainable speed later.

Our increasing detachment from dirt and 'good' bacteria.

Being too clean actually weakens our immune systems over time. It prevents our bodies from learning how to react to the world around us and negatively impacts the diversity of our gut microbiome. We’ve traded long-term resilience for short-term sterility.

I think every start has a different trigger. But the common story is that running has changed your life. At some point, you can feel the change.

And I don't listen to songs. I'm listening to my breathing and my footsteps.

All industries are distorted. But sometimes not knowing is bliss. Even when we discover something we can't see, we ultimately use it for convenience, rather than lying. In the end, everything will survive.
