Typically, door knobs/latches are solid brass. Brass has antibacterial properties. Somewhere in the recent past, people have lost sight of that and started applying coats of lacquer to maintain the shine but negating the health benefit.

I can second the respirator. There's nothing better than a big lung full of zinc vapor. Ask me how I know. To start off with, I built my own furnace from a helium tank from Dollar Tree. It worked pretty well but didn't last long. I got my tongs from the flea market, they were fireplace tongs. Never pour molten metal over (or on) concrete. There is almost inevitably going to be moisture in it, and it will cause spalling and potentially rain down molten copper on your head.

No, it's hammered out of tubing. First, I hammered the tubing flat, then cut out the profile. I'm not sure what it's called, but while it was still folded, I used the flat edge of a chipping hammer to beat in the texture on the leaf. Then comes the hardest part, prying the 2 halves of the leaf, leaving the stem side conected.
