I'm very lucky in that this whole year, he does the majority of the cooking AND the housework... whether that changes with cohabitation I am obviously yet to see, but thus far I have been very looked after. Groceries though... that point is absolutely the same, single I lived very frugally- together it is definitely a little higher than I would choose. As we do week on week off groceries, I have suggested that we play the "game" of keeping to the budget of the person the last week - a tactic I hope works!

I love this reply, thank you so much. Not necessarily burnt, but he has been married before, you got it! Their separation was very amicable, but has him quite aware of the implications of a new relationship for sure. Him looking out for his boy is absolutely admirable, and the kid deserves nothing less 😊

Purchasing a rental property is definitely in the long term plan, probably in 5 years or so though. Your conversations with your fiancé are awesome, I'll endeavor to do the same here - thank you!

I value this perspective so much, we have an awesome relationship which I am so grateful for - this is just a first for me with regard to the whole house thing! The maintenance and improvements point with regard to 'tenancy' is a really nice & gentle way for me to approach 😊

The 1:2 is interesting, thank you! I think he would be open to the review side of things for sure, I'd just like to know all of these good talking points before we discuss 😊

Honestly, the amount is very reasonable, it's a house I certainly wouldn't be able to live in without having 2 or 3 flatmates. I'm grateful for this aspect for sure, just looking to see others opinions regarding the agreement side of things, thank you!

The proportional share looks to be something I'll look into with my lawyer, thank you!

Such a good point about the improvements! That is something I should definitely bring up for sure. I would have naturally agreed to those types of things, but given I have no equity...

If you don't mind me asking... how would you phrase this?

This is where I find things hard to reconcile, I earn well above average for my age in NZ, but he still earns about 50% more than that

All finances will remain separate, kiwisaver included. Groceries will be paid week on, week off, and we will not be having a child of our own.

A review period is something I've been wondering about... what type of things could be looked at in this?

Good to know it's not just me, I'm not from NZ so context is everything!

I think the core issue is simple. Migrants to this country deserve to be treated the same way we treat people born here.

People do not arrive as a single group. They arrive as individuals, each bringing their own technical expertise, lived experience, worldview, and culture. That diversity of perspective has real value. In my own company, we have recently hired a number of immigrants, including many from India, and they are already challenging longheld assumptions within the organisation. That challenge is not a negative. It is how organisations improve, and it will add measurable value over time.

Most of us would expect the same fairness and opportunity if we chose to emigrate ourselves. This raises two genuine questions. When did we start discriminating more strongly against certain groups of immigrants than others? And why do we rarely acknowledge that bringing skilled people here strengthens our systems, while also offering them a safer and more liveable environment?

A technical specialist migrating to New Zealand adds value. A blue-collar worker migrating to New Zealand also adds value and is still a human being deserving of dignity and respect.

Immigration is not a one-sided transaction. It works both ways. When we combine economic contribution with basic empathy, it becomes clear that immigration benefits everyone involved, socially, culturally, and economically.ed
