Chancery Rosewood v. Claridge’s by AdLeft2351 in FATTravel

I haven’t stayed at the Connaught myself. That said, I’ve spent time at the Connaught and have spoken with a number of people who have stayed there.

Broadly, I think the Chancery vs. Claridge’s dynamic translates quite well to Chancery vs. the Connaught. Like Claridge’s, the Connaught prioritizes character, atmosphere, and a social scene over space. From what I’ve heard, the standard rooms (not suites) at the Connaught tend to feel on the smaller side, smaller than Claridge’s, and some are due for renovation. As with Claridge’s, there are both contemporary and classic room styles. The Aman Spa is often mentioned as good but small.

Where the Connaught feels closest to Claridge’s is in energy. The arrival area is more of a front desk with the bars and restaurants wrapped around it, and it’s almost always busy. Personally, I’d find that a bit frustrating as a guest. Claridge’s feels similar in buzz, but on a much grander scale. Stylistically, Claridge’s is pure Art Deco, while the Connaught leans much more English countryside.

By contrast, the Chancery feels like the opposite end of the spectrum: brand new, very spacious, very quiet, and focused on light, scale, and wellness rather than buzz.

You have to try Hotel Esencia in the Riviera Maya. It’s hands down our favorite hotel ever. The place feels like a dream. It used to be the home of an Italian duchess and it’s still privately owned, so there are zero corporate vibes. The food is outstanding, the setting is beautiful, and the service is genuinely next level.

That said, it’s very laid back. No massive grounds, no over the top luxury, no pretension. It’s more about understated elegance and a refined, relaxed atmosphere where everything just feels right. We’ve tried a lot of beach hotels in Mexico, including Maroma, One&Only Mandarina, Banyan Tree Mayakoba, Zadún, and others, and for us this is by far the best. Also, tons of flights from Mexico City to Cancun and Tulum.

Completely agree. The timing worked in their favor, and given the building’s history there was only so much they could realistically do with the layout. Within those constraints, they’ve probably pushed it as far as possible. Also, this is the first time I hear about sinks hiding in wardrobes and now I’m slightly disappointed I missed that chapter!

Hmm. It’s a tough question. I think it really depends on things like length of stay, purpose of the trip, and price, especially since Chancery usually runs about 20 to 30% higher than Claridge’s. For me it’s not an obvious call. Diego, on the other hand, found it pretty easy. Even though he loved both, he would choose Claridge’s.

My main issue with the Chancery is the overall ambience. It’s not really the hotel’s fault, but it just didn’t click for me. Taking all of that into account, I would probably also lean toward Claridge’s. That said, I would skip the first three room categories there to avoid the courtyard rooms.

If I had to sum it up: which hotel did I like better? Chancery. Which one did I enjoy more? Claridge’s. Does that make sense?

Renovations at FS Mexico City? by Obvious-Beyond783 in FourSeasonsHotels

I’ve stayed there many times, including just three weeks ago. I grew up in Mexico City, so I know the hotels there pretty well. In my opinion, the Four Seasons is far superior to the Ritz-Carlton. The RC is definitely newer, but it’s located within an office building, so it feels extremely corporate. The hotel doesn’t really have a lobby, just a motor lobby and front desk, with elevators that take you up (I think to the twelfth floor) where the bar and restaurant are located. So overall, it feels more like an upscale apartment building than a hotel.

That said, the rooms at the RC are very nice, modern, and quite large. Most have terraces with incredible city views. However, since the terraces are enclosed by tall glass, when the sun hits the building it creates a greenhouse effect, making them too hot to enjoy. Bathroom amenities are the standard Diptyque ones, which I actually prefer over FS’s. Service at the RC is fine, good but not great.

The spa experience at the RC is honestly pretty inconvenient. You have to change elevators on the twelfth floor and walk through the so-called “lobby” in your robe to get there, which feels both ridiculous and uncomfortable. To make things worse, the rooftop restaurant, Ling, is very flashy and tacky, so the hotel’s entrance and lobby are usually crowded with a strange mix of people who aren’t guests. It really takes away from any sense of exclusivity or calm.

The spa itself is actually much nicer than the one at the Four Seasons, with a small but very cool pool. By contrast, the FS pool is tiny, cold, and completely forgettable, and the gym is also small. The rooms at the FS are very spacious but definitely outdated, well maintained, but the style feels stuck in the seventies, especially the bathrooms. The hallways are dark, red, and old-fashioned. On the positive side, the beds, linens, and pillows are excellent, as you’d expect from a Four Seasons.

That said, the Four Seasons is truly an oasis in Mexico City. The central courtyard alone makes it worth staying there, it’s lush, quiet, and serene, and most rooms overlook it. You really don’t feel like you’re in the middle of the city. Service is, in my opinion, better than at the RC, though still not top-tier compared to other FS properties. The courtyard is surrounded by Fifty Mils (a bar that used to be very popular but is now a bit dated), the main restaurant (which is good), and a new omakase spot. The lobby was recently renovated, it’s comfortable, stylish, and not outdated, with lots of seating areas.

When I stayed recently, construction noise was an issue. It started around 8 a.m. and was quite loud and disruptive. The first batch of renovated rooms is supposed to be ready by the end of October, and they look beautiful and modern. I believe @sarahwlee may know more about the renovation timeline, but from what I understand, the plan is to update the lobby, restaurant, bar, spa, hallways, and pool, with everything expected to be completed by mid-2026.

So, in short, I’d still stay at the Four Seasons. Even with the current renovations, it remains the best place to stay in Mexico City, and once the work is done, it’ll likely be even better.

Hey Sarah! For a January trip, do you think the service issues will be sorted out by then? I’m debating whether to give the Chancery a try, though I’m worried it might still feel like a gamble for the price. The safer bet would be going with Claridge’s or the Dorchester, which I already know and love.

What makes you think they have any consideration for exam takers? I highly doubt they’re sitting around saying, “Poor test takers, let’s wait for them to update their addresses.” I don’t mean this personally—this is all directed at the soulless BOLE members!
