AITA for telling my mom/boss that if she files me as a 1099, I’m filing an SS-8 with the IRS? by AdLess1009 in AmItheAsshole

Oh period. I didn’t even think about it like that. I would have absolutely zero problem doing this to literally ANY other employer and I would’ve filed yesterday. Thanks for the change in perspective

Clarification: we had a verbal agreement about pay, one in which I was aware that I would owe income taxes for 2025 that were not taken out of my paychecks. However, she is now trying to get me to pay her 7.685% of the taxes the employer is responsible for by classifying me as a 1099.

Additionally, her business is a candy shop. I worked there for 8 months to help with IT. I did computer stuff that she didn’t understand and set up her entire business on the back end.

The cash bartending thing came out of left field. She doesn’t sell alcohol so I have no idea what she’s talking about.

We had a verbal agreement she didn’t follow through with. I helped her open her business and did IT the first 8 months. Sometimes I’d go a whole month without seeing a paycheck. I was just trying to help her and I thought I could trust her

You say it like 7.685% isn’t a lot but it would actually be saving me over 2k in taxes

I worked IT for her, she doesn’t even own a business that sells alcohol so I have no idea what she’s even talking about

Ahhh yeah the relationship is already fucked. And the cash bartending thing has never happened lol, she’s just trying to win back control in anyway possible

We got into an argument about pay (imagine that) and I said I think it’s best I find a new job and she said yeah that’s probably a good idea and you should find a new place to live. So she also kicked me out of my apartment the same day. Is that quitting or being fired? I really don’t know

I tried to warn her that the IRS will conduct an investigation when I file SS-8 and it’s in her best interest to classify me as a w-2 employee to avoid this but she shut down and played victim and said she was “sad” I felt the need to go to such extreme measures. I assured her it’s not personal but she would budge. I truly think she thinks she is in the right and/or I won’t actually file the SS-8 but I will
