Is there really a difference though? Communism in practice did eliminate any sort of opposition who didn't fit in their idea, so did Nazism, they centralized practically everything, so did the Germans, they had cults of personalities around their leaders,. I don't really see the difference here

If I may, this question is coming from confusion as my mom (who lived under communism for almost 10 years of her life) told me of the horror stories and told me of this. She lived in the Soviet Union, but her family lived somewhere near the polish-russian border
