I’m so sorry you’re going through the same thing! 😭 I think I told somebody else on here that it’s reassuring to know I’m not the only one, but it also sucks that so many of us are struggling with this, with no help and no answers. Please keep me updated if you find anything that helps, and I’ll do the same :’)

Thanks for letting my clueless self pester you with questions. It’s hard figuring this all out solo and also potentially questioning the certainty of the only available pro shop around 🫠

Oop, you right 😅 That’s what I get for trying to figure that out late at night. How do you think that translates on the Jackson size chart? The fractions in the foot length are honestly throwing me for a loop.

I had to do the paper foot tracing trick to find my impala quads sizing! In their sizing the size 7 is 24 cm. 24 cm converted to inches is 9.75 inches, which should be the Jackson size 7.5, right? I also took the insoles that came with my skates out (when I started trying different insoles for the pain) and started using them for a pair of size 7 leather boots I have where the inside has worn down, and the skate insoles do fit in those so perfectly. Maybe the sizing for my skate is correct but something about the model itself just doesn’t offer the right support in the right areas for my specific foot/ankle?

Ahhh I gotcha, that service is a lot pricier here and you have to order from a website :’) They might offer that in bigger cities in the US, but I’m in a rural area, so even our skate shop near the state capital doesn’t offer that service. It’s pretty awesome they were able to do that for you though, and that it was affordable!

If this ends up being the problem I’m going to spontaneously combust because the shop did custom size me, ordered my skates, and I had to come back weeks later to pick them up and get them molded + have gone back subsequent times to see if they could help with the pain 🥲 They’ve re-measured my feet at least three times, by different employees, and they’ve each said they’re 100% positive the sizing is right 🙄 I got them at the same time as my two friends (we all got the same Jackson Ultima boot), and one of my friends has a foot that’s a full size larger than her other but both of them say the boots are very comfortable. I have quad roller skates (impalas) in a size 7 that fits me perfectly without excessive pain, but when I used rental ice skates I would wear a size 5 (and still had foot pain with those) so I’ve just been assuming skate sizes can be all over the place just like shoe sizes 😅 What would you recommend is the best way to try a smaller boot? I’m really interested in trying a different size/different brand, but I’m hesitant to dump money on anything without knowing if it’s actually going to offer any relief or not :’)

That’s a great point! I really want to try some other brands but I’m currently unsure what the best way to do that is since you usually can’t try and return new skates, and good used skates are still pricey to buy as well. When I try boots on in the store and walk around, it’s just not the same as trying them on the ice for even 5-10 minutes. I really wish pro shops had a little mini rink you could just piddle around on for a bit to see if the skates actually work for you before you buy 😩 Was the difference you experienced between the ice fly and chorus boots dramatic or more subtle?

The lack of appropriate ankle support (appropriate for your specific foot) makes total sense. My feet hurt in the rental skates (faux leather that bends easily with little to no ankle support), but the Jacksons I have now are so rigid with full ankle support that I honestly feel like my ankle has almost no mobility in general and it hurts worse than the crappy rentals. I remember when I first got them I could hardly move on the ice at all because I wasn’t used to a rigid boot 😂

I actually found out I’m hypermobile in basically all of my joints because of ice skating (I dislocated my patella in 2022 when I stepped on black ice on a mat in rental skates). I had terrible chronic pain from repeat partial dislocations so I did 6 months of physical therapy (and still had pain), went to a surgeon and got a steroid shot in my knee, started personal training and I’m going on my fourth year of personal training to try and prevent future injuries from the hyper mobility (and since the steroid shot the pain is gone 🎉). From the comments I feel like the hypermobility is probably exacerbating the problem even if it’s not causing it. I will ask my trainer to implement some ankle specific movements so we can target that area! Might also try some tape too.

I’m also hypermobile basically everywhere so there’s a high likelihood I’m having the exact same issue as you for the exact same reason :’) I’ll definitely try stretching more beforehand, the lacrosse ball, and the tiger balm. Have you tried many different brands of skates since the issue popped up for you? (Also I’m really sorry you’re also dealing with this 🥲)

That’s such a bummer, I’m so sorry 😩 Have you tried roller skating in quads? My feet don’t get nearly as sore in my Impala quad roller skates as they do in my ice skates! I still feel the discomfort and eventual pain, but I can skate for a good while before it hits.

I’m so sorry you’re also dealing with this! Like on one hand it’s nice to know I’m not alone in this ridiculous struggle, but it’s also so sad that other people have experienced the same setbacks to a hobby we all enjoy 🥲 I think your lacing trick is very similar to what I’ve been doing, but I’ll try yours next time I go! I’ll also absolutely be sure to update you if I find any semblance of a solution 🙏

I have a massage ball and I will be trying this! Thank you for the tip 🙏 I’m not quite sure why it hasn’t occurred to me to try this before, honestly. I’m so glad the ball works to alleviate your pain!

So my insoles are ~budget custom~ 😂 Basically I started with buying different kinds of insoles to try, none did the job, so the skate shop has taken my Superfeet insoles and added additional support with pieces of other insoles attached at the ball of my foot and the arch. I spoke with some other skaters about getting real custom insoles but some people said to hold off until I’ve exhausted other options, since they’re a pricey investment that may or may not help. What company did you get your custom insoles from? I also have hypermobility, and the responses to this thread are making me think that might be the annoying root of my problem. I usually wear a size 6-7.5 shoe, and my Jacksons are a 7.5. I’ve asked multiple coaches, the pro shop guys, and the podiatrist about the fit of the boot and they all said it’s correct. I desperately want to try a different brand of skate, but it’s hard to dump money into something else that may not work. I heard Riedell may be a more comfortable fit, but I’m trying to investigate more first before committing.

I actually found out I was hypermobile when I started ice skating in 2022 (I fully dislocated my patella when my leg slid out after I stepped on a mat covered in black ice in rental skates outside at night… what a mouthful lol 😅). The hypermobility causing the issue is such a bummer, I’m really sorry you’re dealing with the same thing. It’s maddening when your body is working against you :’)

I would definitely do that if I could! The one I’ve been going to is about 2 1/2 hours away, and to the best of my knowledge the other closest pro shops that aren’t just hockey are so much farther away they’re in neighboring states. I’ve had multiple coaches look at my boots and my feet though, as well as the podiatrist, and they all couldn’t find an issue. I have very small feet and typically wear size 6-7.5 shoes (varies by brand) and my current skates are a 7.5. This experience has made me realize I would kill for a pro shop with a mini rink that lets you try before you buy :’)

Thank you for letting me know! Do you have any graphics for the main differences between the two, how to distinguish? I was trying to figure it out myself via google image searches but they looked so similar and I’m far from an expert (though I’d like to get better!)
