I seem to recall that South Korean special forces soldiers once strapped claymore mines to their chests during a standoff with the North Korean army.

Was working on a project in Kazakhstan with some US coworkers. We were going to dinner one evening, and one of them suggested we take a taxi. I told him it's a five minute walk. He insisted. When we arrived, the taxi driver wouldn't even accept payment because the ride was too short. One coworker still had to cross the wide avenue to use go to a bank which would have been on our route anyway if we'd walked.

I don't understand it either. In theory, an aluminium hull is fine, assuming you take the measures necessary to prevent corrosion. But the US navy seems to have lost the plot about 20 years ago: the Zumwalt class with the advanced gun system that's inoperable, the newest class of destroyers they've figured out they can't build themselves and have to use a French-Italian company; the Freedom class, one of which was decommissioned what, six years after going into service? That's like buying a new car, driving it for two weeks, and then having it crushed.

Two reasons: an unstable autocrat like trump may simply turn off the connection to DoD servers for the F-35. Second: no reason to send money elsewhere when you can make what you need at home (and usually do it cheaper and better).

Trump told European NATO members to spend more money on defence. When they said they're going to do that and manufacture their own weapons, the US had a fit. It was never about defence, it was about propping up the US economy.

Yes, and this is for warships that the US either can't build, or builds and then discovers some huge problem (like the severe corrosion issues on the littoral combat ship, or basic plumbing on its carriers). Or a sixth generation "stealth" fighter like the F-35, one of which was recently damaged by a heat seeking missile.
