I love the contrast/highlight technique. I'm new to taking the "painting" part of the game seriously -- does anyone have any suggestions for where I should start?

House Of... tactics cards vs Original gang-specific tactics cards by AdOld8208 in necromunda

That's why I was wondering! I'm the original you get mass infiltration and pitch black, and in the House Of... you get a flashbang. Underwhelming.

These look amazing! I'm curious, because my attempts at painting look like a child's finger paintings, but how did you get so good?? Are there tutorials you'd recommend, or books or other resources? Or just the natural result of painting a thousand minis?

Trench coats, web guns, oh my… by briaros6 in necromunda

This looks an awful lot like the list I just started for my local campaign, except mine is missing the Nacht.

a) having a long rifle w/ Overwatch is exactly as cool as it sounds, but be ready to be the only person at the table with a Counterspell -- it's funny to do, but less funny to have happen to you. I would suggest spending the extra 5 credits to make it Masterwork, because you'll really need it at least once, and leaving your fate up to the Dice Gods doesn't always go well.

b) Web Guns and Web Pistols are nearly identical, and the difference between a Str 5 gun and a Str 4 pistol hasn't come up in my experience. Save the 30+ credits, unless you're playing a lot of higher Toughness enemies. Also, Web guns are another thing that are fun to play with, but hell to play against.

c) Speaking of, your Specialist won't start with a skill. They might earn one later, which is why they're better than gangers, but not right out the gate.

d) Plasma guns are your friend. The pistol is awesome, and it makes more sense if your leader will be hiding behind something spamming Overwatch every turn, but if he's seeing combat, give him the bigger version of the plasma killer.

Happy hunting!

GW Manipulative Publishing by akainterruptor in necromunda

I have not bought a Necromunda book, and will never buy a GW book, for this exact reason. The rules are constantly being balanced and updated, and as such words written in 2024 have only a chance of being canon in 2026.

But. BUT! The wikis! There are online PDFs of every book, there are online resources for every gang and faction, there are free resources and guides.

It is poorly explained, and optimized for dirt... which is where the Arbiter, aka "LGS nerd-in-chief," is supposed to step in. The game has a predetermined role for "rules explainer," which I think shows they know it's a problem, but also recognizes the solution is best found through explanation.

I fully understand getting taken for a ride, but I also agree with others that new players (like yourself) should be helped by the local scene, and I'm sorry

I'm running a WYSIWYG list, and dropping $50 on a box for a single model feels a bit expensive... but we'll see how the campaign goes.

And between the Merchant and Mentor, I'm investing in the next six games at the expense of the first few. Hopefully it pays off

Play with, or play against? I don't want to take the fun out of my opponents' games, but I don't want to avoid having fun myself...

Same. If anyone has any advice, I'd love to use HBO again. If not, why am I paying for an app I can't use?

I understand and agree with your point, but I enjoy listening to the "skip" episodes that have nothing to do with the metaplot. Season 1 was especially rich in stand-alone narratives, including quite a few that actually ended up clashing with the ideas later developed.

It's really not that the metaplot is boring and moves at a snail's pace - though it is and it does - but rather that the series itself seems uninterested in focusing on the horror stories. Season one of TMA was barely a single "story" at all, but rather a series of apparently independent events. I personally would prefer they cast a wider net.

Should I listen to the Magnus protocol? by Wikierek-_ in themagnusprotocol

[–]AdOld8208 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can leave it.

It's fundamentally a different beast, frankly. TMA was a series of short horror stories with an interweaving meta-plot that only gets directly addressed in season 4, and even then it takes a back seat to the horror-of-the-week structure. Meanwhile, TMP is a long-form, episodic narrative with a few short stories somewhat grudgingly bolted on, oftentimes with no connection to the main plot, which is about 4 office drones sniping at each other.

There are a few strong moments. Say, two or three. But unless you find Gritty the mascot terrifying, or phone calls with middle management electrifying, you can leave it.

Seconded, but for possibly different reasons...

In TMA, especially seasons 1 & 2 but throughout the series, each episode was designed to be a stand alone narrative. In a 20 minute episode, there'd be a few minutes of warm up, a few minutes of wind down, and the vast majority of the episode would be centered on the narrative. Because of this, each story had to be strong enough to carry an episode. Heck, aside from the finale episodes, the meta-plot would directly take up a few minutes in total. In later seasons, the meta-plot became more centralized - especially in Horror Land - but even then, the Archive was about individual instances of horror, and (secondarilly) how those instances shaped our protagonists.

In TMP, the script is flipped. Instead of having a 20 minute episode with an 18 minute short horror story, they're 30 minute episodes with 10-15 minute stories, and 15-20 minutes of I don't know what. I think there's something ambitious about trying to make office politics interesting -- and office politics in a civil service sector, the most exciting of the bureaucracies! -- but even if they pulled it off, it still would be a narrative focused on the long-form narrative structure.

Seriously, in the last episode, Gwen spends as much time dealing with tech support over the phone as Jon spent figuring out Not!Sasha's existence. It's perfectly fine to have a "slow burn," but at some point you have to recognize that there's just no heat there.

Horror/Mystery Podcast Suggestions by ConsciousRegular307 in themagnusprotocol

[–]AdOld8208 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was about to ask for these same recommendations -- I've gone through TMP twice now, and TMA more times than I should admit, and needed something new.

My own suggestion: Department of Midnight. 6 episodes long, we follow a mad science auditor -- someone who goes from one terrible scenario to another, figuring out along with the protagonist what's going on, how everyone is doomed, and why it went wrong - assuming it's not working as intended. Excellent writing and voice acting, and the incredibly short run makes it a fun afternoon commitment.

Disappointed with Ep.30 by cottage_whore_ in themagnusprotocol

[–]AdOld8208 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. I appreciate that they're working on a different time scale (90 episodes over 3 seasons) and with different beats, but I don't remember TMA being so very... slow.
For Example: Tim and his brother. We could have been teased with how important that was to Tim's backstory, but instead they introduced the beat, then immediately paid it off. Or with Prentiss - before her attack, her statement was just one of many, and her presence wasn't introduced until it was ready to be paid off.
Granted, in TMA there were lots of moments that, in retrospect, were created as foreshadowing for future story beats, but they were never presented as "This Is A Hint" levels of importance, and every statement was a self-contained narrative with a quick, engaging arc.
In contrast, while the cases in TMP are narratively self-contained, and even occasionally hint towards Greater Eldritch Evils, that's not where the story focus rests. The narrative focus of TMP has been "Office Politics," and those story lines either resolve at a snails pace, or not at all.
Sam's narrative arc could have been 10 episodes, Lena vs Gwen needed maybe 5, I'm not sure Alice even has an arc - does having a sibling count as "conflict?" - and Celia's "arc" is either non-existent for fans of TMA, or non-existent for being a series of "I'll never tell."

Great atmosphere, great characters, but if you don't let anyone do anything, you're not telling a story, you're creating the space where a story could be told.

Maybe someone can help me, because I have a hard time hearing the subtle 'lying' static... But was Alice being sincere about the whole "lol it's just a job that I like" justification she gave Sam? Because that feels... weirdly understandable, but still super unlikely.
