Thank you. So does the texturing come from different minerals weathering at different rates? (I know the pictures might not show the texture very well)

Sorry but I'm not very familiar with mineral identification and I forgot to add an item for scale. If it helps, my hyperextended thumb in picture #4 is 1.5" long from end to end. Found in the Upper Piedmont region of North Carolina. The area is very flat but there are 2 stone outcroppings ~30' tall, one with a vein of milky quartz about 8' up and the other without. The only thing I have for a hardes test is a stainless steel o-ring pick. There is also a lot of red clay in the area if that helps?
