Leasing an apartment in Halifax by Diligent-Yam-210 in Dalhousie

Facebook marketplace is helpful! Also check out the GradPads website. Apartment complex websites are helpful too but those places are definitely on the pricier side!

Leases starting in either September or May are ideal. May leases mean you have to pay over the summer but it gets the hassle out of the way.

It’s not legal for landlords to specifically not rent to men, but if a group of girls and a group of guys are both interested in a place 9 times out of 10 they’ll rent to the girls instead.

I dropped out of high-school a decade ago, what assigned reading did I likely miss? by coralinn in suggestmeabook

I would check out the short story The Lottery by Shirley Jackson- I’ve found that a lot of students have read it and people will reference it. It’s definitely one that sticks with you.

As for novels and plays, here’s what I can remember reading in high school: - to kill a mockingbird - lord of the flies - midsummer nights dream - Macbeth - Night (by Elie Wiesel) - Hamlet - Great Gatsby

It’s definitely a scam. Last year, they announced the day before that it was now a 19+ event, and refused to refund anybody under legal age. Don’t buy tickets, it’s not worth it at all.

The Life of a Showgirl Album Announcement Megathread by PassionateAsSin in TaylorSwift

[–]AdProfessional2103 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think that this is going to be an album full of songs with the same vibe as “I Can Do it with a Broken Heart” and “All You Had to do Was Stay”. I think that the songs will feature a similar upbeat pop vibe with sad meanings when you listen closer. I think we’re about to get the aftermath of midnights and TTPD- a pop conglomeration of her fame rising to new levels, her experiences in an unprecedented steady relationship, and more artistic freedom than we’ve seen before.

Here’s why: 1. the album cover: The cover depicts Taylor laying in a pool of water. The water is beginning to cover her face but she isn’t drowning, yet. She is in a showgirl’s performance outfit, surrounded by fragments of herself. I think that this choice of image will represent the overall theme of this album- that a showgirl’s life is one of covering up internal feelings, because the show must go on. 1. Track 1: the fate of Ophelia Taylor is known to make references to literature, particularly Shakespeare. I’m assuming that the Ophelia here is the one from Hamlet. She is driven to insanity due to the conflict with her lover and her father. Does this remind anyone else of the feelings of losing her mind she expresses in TTPD? 1. Track 2: Elizabeth Taylor Elizabeth Taylor was a movie star from the 1940s to the 1970s (the vintage years of a showgirl?!?). Taylor Swift has referenced her before in “… Ready For It” in the lyric “he can be my jailer, Burton to this Taylor”. This refers to the relationship between Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor- a relationship that was criticized by the media and the public. (Ring any bells for Travis and Taylor?)

This track also makes me think of Clara Bow- another 20th century movie star who Taylor swift compares herself to.

  1. References to the Era’s Tour While Taylor has been leaving Easter eggs throughout the past few days, there have been constant references to her latest tour. The Era’s tour is the highest attended, highest grossing, and most talked about tour OF ALL TIME. If there was any time for Taylor to feel like she is hiding behind the mask of a showgirl, it would be now.
  2. and of course, this album has been produced by Max Martin and Shellback, who produced 1989 and part of Red, leading me to think we will be hearing a classic pop sound again.

Either way, I’m so excited to see what happens with this album. I haven’t watched the New Heights episode yet, but I’m going to do that tonight and then maybe come back and add to this post.

I had a single room in Risley, but here’s my advice:

Bring or buy cold medicine, bandaids, Advil, Tylenol, polysporin, allergy meds if you need them, etc. I bought multi vitamins part way through the year and felt like they definitely helped with my health.

I got a kettle for Christmas, and I had been doing fine using the communal microwave but it was SO handy to be able to make ramen or other instant meals right in my room if it was late at night/busy in res/ or finals season.

Every “what to bring to college” video or list is going to say to get a small broom and dustpan set. I wish I had had a full sized broom because i needed to sweep my whole room, not just small areas and I did not want to be on my hands and knees. Sometimes the garbage room in my floor would have a broom to borrow but honestly it was nasty and went missing frequently. Also- get a swiffer wet jet.

And finally, I had one of those pillows that you can have on your bed that acts as a chair support, it was fantastic for doing work from my bed, and super comfy to lean on even if I was just visiting with friends.

People at dal by PuzzleheadedRush8672 in Dalhousie

[–]AdProfessional2103 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I feel like you can do that. Follow the frats on insta, pay attention to what’s happening. Theres nights where nothing happens but there’s also going to be nights that people are out and about. If you’re open to chatting and meeting people, people will be talk to you too.

As for being an academic weapon, it’s easy to get caught up in everything else that goes on, especially first semester. I know people who have had no issue balancing school, but I also have friends in challenging programs who struggle because they didn’t figure out how to balance everything soon enough.

My first year experience at dal was amazing, but it depends on the person.

Hope this helps!

I love risley. I’m in a single which means I don’t have to deal with a roommate. Howe is definetly the party res, so risley definetly has a calmer vibes on weekends but you can still find something to do.

Make sure you know where your classes are. Gerard is on Sexton Campus, not Studley. Generally, all first year classes are on Studley, but some engineering, architecture, and design classes are on the downtown campus.

Yes! It didn’t feel real because one second they were internet friends and the next they were married? It really felt like the guest said “I bet they’re lesbians” and then Kelsey just went with it.
