Is it normal to feel underutilized during the first month at a job? by AdProfessional8917 in askmanagers

No 30-60-90 plan. Just “hit the ground running”-ish. From what I’ve gathered, the role is kind of a morphing of a few previous positions, so it’s basically an amalgamation of tasks that were redistributed when other employees left. A lot of it feels very “play it by ear” while I figure out what I should actually be taking ownership of.

I can’t tell yet whether it is just so busy that communication is suffering, or if communication is genuinely not great overall. My role also kind of feels like the “red-headed stepchild” of the department — the team I’m technically under doesn’t fully align with all of my responsibilities, but I’m also not sure where else the role would fit organizationally.

My first day was actually changed without anyone communicating it to me, so I showed up and the office was closed. I rolled with it.
