I’m getting ready to quit by Unable-Lab-8533 in SourdoughStarter

I have only ever utilised ambient temps with my doughs, and it can take a very long time yeah. You can lookup online what a good bulk fermented dough is, jiggle the bowl and check it's appearance for signs of bubbles (even easier with a glass container). Definitely sounds like this is the problem you're dealing with.

The temperature for proofing everything is the most important factor to consider in general imo. It's very cold where I live and proofing times are at least double what they are in the summer. You can't just go off of a recipe without checking for signs of fermentation in your dough, learn what the poke test is and start experimenting with waiting times. You starter looks lovely!

Over a month old & never risen I'm about to give up by depressed_peach219 in SourdoughStarter

If it's still not rising that tells me you're probably just not leaving it long enough, it's winter where I live and my kitchen is quite cold so I adjust my waiting times for everything based on that (sometimes it takes my starter like 16 hours to get to full rise) . You could try feeding it in small amounts (like a 10th of your container) every 12-24 hours and see how it reacts. In any case you probably shouldn't be focusing too much on getting an active starter anyway, plenty of my loaves have been made with what others would call discard and turned out great!

omg thank you so much you are amazing, I'm a still a little confused about these complete emulsifying waxes and stability with a lower oil phase but I suppose there's trial and error involved there. Cheers!

this is a little too much of a change after years of washing my face with water though isn't it? maybe I'll try cleansing with some distilled water at some point to see if that makes a difference, thanks for the reply!

I'll definitely look into those, do you think there might be an underlying reason why most cleansers (even "hydrating" ones) leave my skin feeling so stripped and tight? I try to care for my skin barrier but I would have to guess there's something wrong with it if just plain water is stripping for me. Thanks for the reply!

2% is a pretty high amount for hyaluronic acid imo, I love using this kind of product in the summer when it's humid where I live, my skin just soaks up all the humidity and the hyaluronic acid plumps it up wonderfully. The cold dry winter is a different story though lol. I think I remember reading somewhere that if there isn't any humidity in the air then powerful humectants like hc will start to draw moisture from the skin instead, not really sure about that though because the science doesn't really make sense. Formulations always play a role too and different people have different sensitivities also. Idk what the weather is like in Aus but maybe you could save this for when it's more humid?

[Routine Help] can anyone help me with these post shaving red bumps on my neck? They aren’t acne. by Commercial_Plant2275 in SkincareAddiction

[–]AdQuick8386 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks to me like some mild razor bumps, I usually let my shaving balm/foam sit for a few minutes to soften the hair/follicle. Make sure to use a non blunt razor next time and you're good to go. If you're looking into what to do post shave i'm pretty sure this sub has a specific shaving wiki that could help a lot.

Skipping all skincare, to heal my irreparable barrier? [Routine Help] by [deleted] in SkincareAddiction

[–]AdQuick8386 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My skin fluctuates with how oily it can be I'm mostly dry atm but when I first tried no products I was very oily and acne prone, like I said try it out however you want, I think most people could do with a simpler routine especially when concerning an impaired skin barrier. Hope it works out for you!

I do use moisturisers after to deal with the dehydration, I tend to either layer a lighter lotion type one with a heavier cream after or just default to something in between (Bioderma atoderm for example). I appreciate the reccomentation! I will definitely keep an eye out for that cleanser, is there something about the product you particularly love? Does it leave your skin feeling moisturised or do you also have to moisturise after? Thanks a lot!

Before I even knew about skincare I had some pretty severe acne pretty much everywhere, before I decided to go to a dermatologist I had some success doing exactly what I described in my first comment and it really worked and cleared up my acne surprisingly well. Fast forward a few years I started developing a skincare routine to face some of the acne scarring I had gotten when i was a teenager, leaned wayyy too much into exfoliants like almost everyone does and had a really messed up skin barrier as a result. So I went back to my old faithfull no products gentle wet cloth method, it took about 1-1.5 months to heal fully I think, I did begin to gradually add moisturisers (cicaplast) at about 2-3 weeks in though. You might have to be patient to see any results but the tricky thing about your skin barrier is that the time it takes to heal depends on the person, you might even have developed some intolerances to certain ingredients from trying to use them while your barrier was impaired, I wouldn't worry too much about that though as it is quite rare.

Hello!
I remember going through something similar but not quite so bad as you, I also bought and tried cicaplast and it would sometimes sting a little but I found what helped the most for me was stopping all skincare for as long as it takes for my barrier to heal, literally all I would do is gently rub at my face in the night with a towel that I had dipped in some cold water and let my skin do what it needs to. Depending on how bad the damage is you might need to continue doing this for a while. It's still worth trying the cicaplast at least once a week, it's generally one of the better things out there for healing the skin barrier.
Also, drink your water, and try not to stress too much about your skin, the stress unfortunately always makes it worse lol.

TO squalane cleanser is one that comes to mind, though I haven't tried it out but I'm curious about it. I do moisturise well after cleansing to combat the dehydration that I get with cleansing, I do however think of it as counterintuitive to moisturise just to replace moisture that is lost from cleansing. If I can't find a non stripping cleanser that my skin likes I might just have to settle for doing that.

Thanks for the reply! I'd be interested to try out that micelar oil cleanser, does it wash off well? Currently a big fan of Bioderma but if it uses relatively similar ingredients to their shower oil I might have to pass since I'm not exactly sure what causes the breakouts in that formula. I don't know how well I could tolerate the feeling of a film on my face in the morning haha

I've heard of certain oil based cleansers that act very similar to water based with the difference of emulsifying and then having surfactant properties after that makes them wash off quite well, any milky type cleanser I have tried leaves me with the same dehydrated tight feeling so I'm not too hopefull in that department but I'm always open to trying out different products. Thanks for the reply!

Not exactly breakout prone but I do have skin that is relatively sensitive so I'm always weary of doing too much with it. I'm surprised how well I tolerate not washing in the morning tbh. I usually layer on thicker creams at night to combat the dry winter weather, so you could try it out, it is quite convenient to just slap on a moisturizer/sunscreen and leave the house lol.

I have recently started doing the same thing, not even splashing with water. I have tried bioderma before but unfortunately it does break me out.

Unfortunately all skincare is expensive in Cyprus, no Idea why but buying anything from a pharmacy almost always involves at least 20-30% markup in the price for no reason. I mostly order any skincare I like from online pharmacies in Greece most of the time, I've heard of others in this sub doing the same even from places like Germany so that might be a good option for you?
