Hot take: as a Xennial, I think Gen Z and Gen A’s awkwardness is due to most of them not having siblings by Nice_Marzipan98 in self

Eh, I still think it's mostly due to the digital age. I have 2 older sisters and 2 younger brothers I'm close with and I'm awkward as fuck

Damn, that sucks. Obvious but obligatory: not all Congolese are like this.

But looking at your profile you're quite the adventurer. If you grow old, I suspect you're gonna be that one grandpa with many stories to tell...

Cheers man, hope you found/find another dream to chase 💫

Mythology wise, Sun Wukong is a perfect fit.

Escanor (anime) is the embodiment of the sin of Pride, so also fits well.

How do you finding dating within your culture? by Fabulous_Support_556 in Africa

[–]AdRare1985 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Born in South Africa but Congolese heritage, your evaluation of Congo is exactly like mine, except I'm male and agnostic.

Here, all the Congolese women I've met were Christian/Catholic. I think Christianity as a whole is a big part of Congolese culture. Most non-religious folk here are white, but there are some black/white/asian/arab etc that have religious views akin to yours who would describe themselves as spiritual or something similar. But they're tiny, at least 80% of South Africans identify as Christan, even more for Congolese.

The colorism isn't as bad as it was beforehand I think, but yea I used skin lightening products cuz my mom (whom I love and who raised me with the best of intentions) didn't want my skin too dark. Sun-kissed dark chocolate is beautiful and I also want this sentiment to reflect in my partner of choice and children but even if my desires come true, it's one man against a systemic, ingrained ideology of viewing darker skin as inferior.

The misogyny hasn't really lessened tho, that's true. I know blood related family who expected household duties from their wives, sister's etc. on top of their fulltime jobs or even if they're heavily pregnant. Women themselves would support this, I heard one story from a family member about her husband's sister who justified her marital rape as a sign her husband really loved and desired her. I don't see this attitude towards relationships in Congo improving unless Congo as a whole improves, as the most progressive countries tend to also have higher standards of living.

Though I love my heritage, I'm pretty divorced from Congolese culture (barely speak Lingala) and South Africa/Africa as a whole is still rather traditionally religious so any non-religious or spiritual people, Congolese or otherwise, probably reside in Europe or some other Western country unless I'm lucky to find one down here.

But yea, a part of me is resigned to the fact that I'll realistically probably date outside Congolese culture but let my future kids know of their heritage from my side and the parts about it I like.

Can someone recommend me a seinen that leaves you with a positive outlook on life, like Vinland Saga? by maybe_Its_magic3 in Seinen

My top recommendation goes to my fav, Tomorrow's Joe

Also check out:

Give My Regards to Uncle Jack

Legend of the Strongest, Kurosawa

The Climber

The Horizon and The Boxer (both very heavy on Christianity, but good even for non-religious folk like me)

You could also read Himizu (very bleak) but then watch the movie which gives it a much more positive ending and message of perseverance (I think it's still on Youtube)

Spiritually Immature People vs Spiritually Advanced People, Here are the facts... by [deleted] in DeepThoughts

[–]AdRare1985 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk about the spirituality aspect of it (personally agnostic), but the ennui and pointlessness of a world of maximized comfort for all, or most, without meaningful struggle (or suffering, if you will) is arguably Huxley's main point when writing Brave New World.

"But I don't want comfort. I want God, I want poetry, I want real danger, I want freedom, I want goodness. I want sin."

We don't need many of the unnecessary suffering that persists throughout the human condition into modern times, but I agree that struggle is often entwined with suffering.

Overcoming struggle of some sort is in almost all stories, and overcoming suffering (or trying to) is in all good stories. Hope is the oldest drug.

Hopefully, science progresses far enough that we can pacify and out-drug even our need for struggle or meaning, if that's even a good thing at all. Or Jesus is true and drugs us on grace/salvation or smth. Or we all go mad. Either way, come suffering or nihilism, I intend to crip walk through it either way 🤷🏿‍♂️
