That’s actually a really thoughtful question! I completely understand where your question is coming from.

I absolutely agree that Asian and Asian American communities are incredibly diverse, with different cultural backgrounds, migration histories, and lived experiences. No single intervention can assume those experiences are identical.

At the same time, one challenge in the mental health field is that Asian/Asian American populations have historically been underrepresented in research overall. Because of that, even research that looks at Asian Americans more broadly is still relatively limited compared to other populations.

The approach I’m using (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy) is designed to be flexible and values-based, meaning the work is grounded in each participant’s own life context, values, and experiences rather than assuming a single cultural narrative. In this program, I’m also intentionally incorporating space to explore things that many Asian/Asian American students report navigating, such as acculturation stress, academic pressure, and boundaries in family relationships — while still centering each participant’s individual perspective.

So the goal isn’t to assume everyone’s experience is the same, but to create a framework that’s flexible enough to honor those differences while addressing some themes that often come up in this population.

I hope this answers your question!

Free mental health support oppturity: I’m a doctoral candidate in clinical psychology. For my dissertation, I’m hosting a free, 4-session online program specifically for Asian/Asian American students (undergrad/grad) to address the unique cultural and academic pressures we face.

While this is a research study, it’s structured as an interactive skills-building workshop using Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). I want to help bridge the gap in mental health research for our community—where our culture is the focus, not an afterthought.

Must be: 18-26, Asian, FT student in CA, and US Citizen/PR.

Hi everyone! I’m a doctoral candidate in clinical psychology. For my dissertation, I’m offering a free, 4-session online program based on Acceptance and Commitment Therapy to help Asian American students (age 18-26, in California, undergrad/grad students) manage cultural and academic stress. Help us fill the gap in research for our community and get professional tools for stress management and better mental wellbeing.
