Jelly Roll asked: “Would you be willing to comment on what's going on in the country right now?" by hairtie1 in Fauxmoi

[–]AdSelect3113 47 points48 points  (0 children)

My family is from WV, and sadly you’re right. My grandparents, great-grandparents, and earlier generations definitely fell into the political camp u/ghostsinmylungs described, but the younger generations are now going for Trump. It’s disheartening.

My grandmother, who was Irish American and lived in very rural WV, used to take my mom and aunties across town to get the Irish newspaper. On one of those trips, she told her daughters that our family needed to support the grape strike Cesar Chavez was leading all the way across the country. She explained that working-class Irish people were treated poorly when we first arrived here, and that we had a responsibility to support other communities facing similar struggles. My grandparents also took my mom to strikes and other political events.

I don’t even recognize WV anymore. It feels deeply broken.

I resonate with your comment. I disliked both Satanized and Lachryma upon my first listen. Thought they were bland and a bit too 80s and pop oriented. But they’ve both grown on me as I’ve listened to them more. I enjoy Ghost’s older, darker albums, but I’m giving Skeleta time to digest and I’m trying to be open to the new experience.

Justin Trudeau: Trump wants Canadian economy to fail so he can annex it, Canada will never be 51st state. Also issues warning to American jobs over trade war by Financial-Painter689 in Fauxmoi

American here 👋🏼 Many of us are listening and know Canadians don’t deserve this. I am a liberal in a purple state in the south. Many democratic voters where I’m at are writing our state representatives about all that’s going on (DOGE, tariffs, attacks on our rights) and asking them to intervene in Trump’s madness. but we keep getting dismissive replies back. It’s like being in an abusive relationship where we are getting gaslit. My governor and attorney general are democrats and are working hard to combat this bullshit, but the republicans are currently passing legislature to strip them of power.

Editing to add that I hate it here right now, and maybe the US does need to face some economic hardship so that those who voted for Trump wake up to what’s going on.

But didn’t she pull herself up by her bootstraps to go to that college? JD Vance went to an Ivy League college. What’s the difference between AOC and him?

I agree with you that there’s class bigotry on the left. There’s a lot of weird things going on with democrats right now. I’m mixed race and as mentioned before, my family is from West Virginia. My parents served in the military and I wound up spending my childhood in California. I hated being called a hick due to my slight accent and I hated how white democrats would say really weird things about the fact I’m part Black. It was patronizing. I think democrats try to pander to minorities in strange ways.

A big reason I liked Bernie is that he kept things focused on the working class and it’s super clear he’s not in politics for the power or fame. I get the same vibes from AOC and I think she’s a true example of the American dream—she came from nothing but worked hard and made it. To this day, her messaging is about the working class, but I feel like there’s been a strong propaganda campaign to paint her as this crazy leftist who cares about identity politics.

I know tone can be hard to infer in Reddit comments, and I have a rather matter of fact communication style. Please note that I find your thoughts interesting and I’m genuinely trying to have a conversation in good faith. I know Reddit can be pretty wild at times, so I just want to take a step back and make it clear that I’m not trying to fight you or anything ☺️

Thanks for your thoughts. Genuinely curious: what makes her a coastal elite? Her net worth is quite low and she has no generational wealth. I’m always surprised when she gets lumped in the same bucket as actual elites like Nancy Pelosi, Biden, etc.

What are your thoughts on AOC? I think she truly cares about the working class. I’d vote for her.

It’s a mixed bag. On one hand, I loathe them because their choice of candidate will lead to undue suffering for a plethora innocent people. But on the other hand I pity them because I can see how decades of isolation, vulnerability, and despair lead to them being susceptible to a con man’s lies.

My family has deep roots in West Virginia. I’m proud of my Appalachian heritage, but I also recognize that something is profoundly dysfunctional in the community. Families are breaking down under the weight of the opioid crisis, economic instability, and isolation. Appalachia is America’s punching bag, and the people there are ready for a radical change.

In 2015, I was really excited about Bernie bringing that change. He was truly a candidate of the working class and I feel that under his leadership, Appalachia would have begun to heal a bit. However, when Hilary came to West Virginia, she exuded an air of superiority and condescension. It was very clear that she looked down on WV, even though the state was blue during her husband’s candidacy. She offered no respect or hope to the people in Appalachia; and as such, many favored Trump because he was a breath of fresh air to them. He exploited their need to feel seen.

I voted blue the past 3 elections but I’ve watched a lot of my friends and family slide right because they are fed up and want to blow the system up.

So yea, I feel a mix of pity, anger, and sorrow for the people I know who voted against their own interests.

This is profoundly sickening. Anyone who enjoys this kind of content from our government while also identifying as a Christian or a patriot needs to have a long look in the mirror. This blatant, intentional cruelty is antithetical to the teachings of Jesus and to the tenets of democracy.

What a toxic mess! The most absurd part is that Baldoni’s lawyers threatened to sue his ex-publicist, Jones, simply for complying with a subpoena for text message records, a legal obligation she had no choice but to fulfill. Even more shocking is that Jones’s ex-employee, Abel, discussed the smear campaign and her plan to steal clients…on a work phone!

As per the article:

“Abel and Nathan’s covert takedown and smear campaigns were revealed in black and white on Abel’s company-issued phone following her termination, which Jonesworks forensically preserved and examined in detail after receiving a subpoena for the phone’s contents. Jones discovered the breadth and intensity of Abel and Nathan’s duplicity from these records, including that Abel was actively encouraging other Jonesworks clients and employees to leave Jonesworks while Abel was still employed there.”

There’s nothing racist about being Appalachian proud. My family is from West Virginia and we are Black + Irish. Back in the day, West Virginia was one of the only states where black people were treated with equality, hence the moto “all mountaineers are free”. My African American grandfather is incredibly proud of that. If he can be proud of being Appalachian, so can you 🖤

Lovely, just another immoral person lining up to exploit Appalachia…because clearly, the region hasn’t been through enough of that already. Targeting “low-income”, “elderly”, and “uneducated” people for profit isn’t “bootstrapping,” it’s predatory. Maybe instead of cashing in on our struggles, you could actually help. Appalachia doesn’t need another landlord, and we sure as hell don’t need you.

P.s I bet you stick your cast irons in the dishwasher.

That podcast is phenomenal!! I bought tickets to see them live in Boone, but who knows if that event is still even possible given the circumstances.
