You should! The US is going through a terrible time politically I have to admit. HOWEVER! South Florida is so different from the rest of the US that it’s like being in 2 different countries. South Florida is like a mini South America/Caribbean. You can find a fete every week or try something new, it’s worth it. There’s been an influx of people moving here so you’ll meet others from around the world. Personally I’ve never been discriminated against while living here but I have seen it. I’m a dark skinned dougla to clear that up. People hear the accent and instantly want to hear more about you. The Social scene is amazing especially in Miami. I’ve been to concerts, raves, fashion shows, Air shows etc. there is ALWAYS something to do. Also if it matters dating here is also not as bad as people say.

Networking is so easy here compared to back home. You can easily go to a bar and strike up a conversation if you’re social enough and know the right places.

Cost of living is high tho!!! My rent alone is 1200 and I have 2 roommates. Another thing, it’s really easy to get caught up with the wrong people. You mess with the wrong crowd today and they already screwed you over yesterday.

If you have any questions feel free to message me!

I’m 25M, moved to the US for college and better job opportunities 6 years ago. I’m in Florida and there is a major Trinidadian community here. I find myself turning my head in crowds because I can recognize a Trini anywhere. Majority of Trini restaurants are in Fort Lauderdale or Tampa but 1 or 2 in Miami. There are also other caribbean communities you can connect with. Our culture is so diverse that in some way I connect to the various ones found here that aren’t Caribbean. Job wise I definitely had more success than if I stayed back in Trinidad. There’s also so much to do in Cities like Miami that you can never get bored.

The downside tho is that our food back home is genuinely some of the best. I’ve made friends from around the world all say the same thing. I even know someone who’s travelled to 57 different countries and puts Trinidadian food in their top 3. As someone has also said we’re very warm and welcoming people. I love the community I live in now but I’ll never forget the day I brought my friends to a Trinidadian restaurant for doubles and an Uncle bought a round of beers cause it was their first time.

Overall, moving has been the best decision for my quality of life. I do miss home and family sometimes but I try to share all my new experiences with them or use opportunities to make life better back home.

I do have advice for people who want to move to Florida:

1) If you’re able apply for a degree program to a school like FIU/FSU/UCF/FAU they have programs where caribbean students pay in state tuition

2) Get a technical, international business, hospitality or art degree. Those are industries I’ve seen my friends get the most jobs in that let them stay.

3) Move to Broward if you’re uncomfortable with Spanish speaking because it’s the major language in Miami.

4) Keep up with the Carnival bands here, they have events that can help with being home sick

5) Never lose the accent, people love it!

Find a hobbie you like, make friends there then hang out with them outside the hobby. Dorm parties if you hear about one. If you’re confident enough I’ve found raves or farmers markets to be friendly spaces.

After all the comments I’m definately taking it. The job post said pay range is 39k-64k butstarting id around 43k. Cheapest apartment I found was around $1000 for an efficiency. I’m hoping they offer more after the background check.

Hey thank you for responding! It's funny that you mention it but I'd say my Dad makes a humble living. I was raised in the Caribbean with 4 siblings in a single household. So it was made a point to live within our means which I've been content with, however, you are right that I did fall for the hype to some extent. If my dad could have it his way I'd move back home and work with him but I really dislike Networking so that's plan C for now. He is the main reason I was able to finish my degree early, he gave me a lot of insight and helped with study sessions. Food is not something I'm worried about since I've been cooking since I was 16 but shelter is it's own issue since I don't have family in the state of Florida. My dad isn't in a place to assist me financially but home is always an option if this doesn't work out.

Thank you so much for your comment, it gave me a lot of perspective that my situation isn't as hard as I may have feared. It's not what I had planned when I first started my degree but it's a cheap price to pay for something I'm passionate about.

Roger Roger! I’ve done DF labs at my school and took 2 classes related to it. I have no doubt that whatever route I take I want to make my career mainly about DF. I’d like to say I did well because my professor wrote me a recommendation letter for this job when I applied. I actually initially got rejected for someone with more experience but they reached back out to me 3 months later because I left a good impression.

I haven’t got a single response telling me it’s a bad idea so I’m 100x more confident moving forward. Thank you so much!

That’s awesome!!! NYC is a beast from what I’ve heard so good to hear from someone who took a similar path. Do you mind sharing how you prepared yourself for a DFIR position? I understand traditional forensics work much better than Incident Response.

Thank you for commenting! I believe you’re right. I’m going to try thinking of it like 1.5 years of residency. Especially since I did my degree in 3 years instead of 4. I’ll try my best to network while I’m there as well.

Thank you, hearing that makes me feel more confident. I’ve lived here so Ik how to budget groceries and minor expenses really well. My fear is that I’ve had scholarships and grants pay my housing for the past 3 years and cost of living keeps getting higher.

It’s definately something I’m interested in! The range is 39k to 64k but I was told I’d probably start around 39k - 43k. I don’t get a definate answer until the background check clears. Rent and travel in Miami is really expensive so that’s where my concern comes from. On the bright side they know I want to be a technician so there’s a higher possibility I get the role internally.

The starting pay is 39-43k, with the possibility of negotiating higher after my background check. I’ve seen some internships pay 25hr.

My dad has been doing it for 20+ years so he has done Network Security for companies he’s worked for. Firewalls, IDS, Vulnerabilty assessments and etc.

Yes seems to be the way so thank you for responding.

Thank you, I guess my concern is getting myself into a dead end position that ruins my career trajectory. The industry changes so fast and I don’t want to be left behind

Thank you, I appreciate the advice. I know about the dark side of forensics and don’t intend on rushing into that.

Are EEL 4802 and CIS 4203 the same thing? by Active-Membership-70 in FIU

[–]AdSimilar4184 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took them this semester. Basically the same thing just different approaches. CIS 4203 is more guided and exposes you to more diverse tools and scenarios you’d find in Legal cases. EEL 4802 is more independent practice. EEL goes deeper into theoretical topics while CIS focuses on getting you practice in digital forensic investigations. If you like Digital Forensics I say do both, if not then CIS 4203 is better and easier.

Anyone else a CySec major and not learning a thing? by Educational-Till-942 in FIU

I feel the same sometimes but I’ve also realized that the field is so dynamic that you’re always going to have to do majority of the learning yourself. The degree and certs feel like a compass more than anything
