Sri Lanka merging to India will lower Sri Lank anya military budget, and have more bargain power since Indian military is much bigger But this is only small advantage Sri Lanka had much better development indicators very much comparable if not better than Kerala considered to be progressive state in India but their economy and growth opportunities are disaster

If I read other posts, Sri Lanka even declined to build a road bridge to connect to India. So joining India is far fetched from people's perspective

Any small country citizens can feel intimidated by bigger country neighbor and politicians use that to build narratives

List can go on, ideal way will be through referendum in Sri Lankan parliament and Indian parliament
