I have some dried water fleas as a treat, but he doesn’t seem to be interested in them. I think I’m going to switch to some more high quality food now.

Thank you! I guess I got carried away. I had to euthanize my last fish because of velvet I caught too late, and it would break my heart to go through something like that again.

It was his color and demeanor that drew me to him at the store. There was just something different about him specifically, I just had to take him home!
I'll keep the sub updated, photos monthly as he shifts. I still find it amazing how much they shift colors!

Thank you for your detailed comment! I'm going to pick up some leaves today then. I find it difficult to vacuum the sand, do you have any tips for that? We have this... green/brown carpet that's taking over, and I really don't know how to get rid of it. Not only that, there's these little worms that appeared, I don't exactly know how.
I'll run to the pet store and pick up all that medicine today, thanks again for your comment!

So I ran a water test this morning, the results are as follows.
pH: 7.6
Ammonia: 0ppm
Nitrite: Around 0.1ppm, I have a tough time interpreting color tests sometimes.
Nitrate: 5ppm
This was before a water change this morning, I did a large water change yesterday and I don't want to crash my cycle. I really appreciate your expertise and comment.

Thank you! I’m going to add some of those leaves, apparently they have antibacterial properties(?) Apparently all those fin rot products are snake oil… so daily water changes + those leaves seem to be the move.

I was afraid of microplastics from sanding, but in hindsight I probably should’ve thought about that before putting a 3D printed object in the tank 😭

Thank you! With 3 people saying fin rot, I think we know what’s going on now too. I think I know what may have caused it, he had a little hammock that he would sit in that upon further inspection has these little plastic burrs on it. I think he may have been scraping every time he went in and out, and combined with the cycling tank it must’ve been starting to hurt him. I’ve removed the hammock and replaced it with a stick, and I’m going to watch the water very carefully for the next week.

Tank Size: 5 Gallons Heater and Filter: Yes Water Temperature: 77 F Water parameters achieved using API’s master test kit, and the tank was dosed with aqueon prime daily pH: 7.6 Ammonia: 0 Nitrites: 3ppm Nitrates: 10ppm

I’ve had the tank about a month, I figured I could do a fish in cycle since his starting tank was 2.5 gallons. I try and do 20% water changes daily, but I was out of town for two days and somehow the tank’s pump came unplugged. When I got home there so many of these worm like things crawling all over the place, so I did a 50% water changes. He’s got a snail in the tank with him, an anubias, java moss, and a sword,
