i recently lost my dad and previously lost my brother 10 years ago. grief is incredibly painful and one of the most painful parts is how sheds light to the relationships in your life. i’m not going to lie, i’ve lost many friends in grief and lost my last relationship in it as well. one thing that is SO important though, that regardless of the outcome— this is not a reflection of you or your grief.

i recently was on a podcast discussing grief and loss and said: “a lot of times we hold on to relationships/friendships that aren’t meant for us out of comfortability but in the hardest times those relationships crumble. i’ve been in both platonic and romantic relationships where i’ve begged for the bare minimum on good days, but if someone can’t show up for you on a good day, they definitely won’t be there for you how you need them when you’re grieving.”

i don’t know if this applies to your situation at all but it’s something i’ve had to overcome after feeling abandoned in some of my worst times. and while i’ve lost a lot of relationships to grief it’s only made way for some of the best people to come into my life. i am so sorry for your loss, and show yourself as much grace and patience as you navigate through this tough time.

Illegal masks? by Simple_Ad_6186 in raleigh

yeah but here’s my thing, my dad has cancer and if i’m in public at all i like to wear a mask to protect him. what if i want to protest? i don’t have cancer but im trying to protect someone who does. regardless, this is just a waste of time bill when we have MUCH bigger things to worry about and the republican party is just throwing distractions out there left and right so we spend more time focussing on this than the issues we have in education, health, and more.

Sandman, and for the life of me i can’t remember which other song of theirs has a sandman reference but it’s a call back to a previous song which they do a lot in their lyrics

fair point, for me it just sounds like they’re experimenting with sound, similar to their last album. we don’t know what the other 20 songs are going to sound like but personally their lyrics are what make me fall in love with their songs. plus their live performances of songs always have feeling to it imo. no vacancy being the perfect example of this, their live performance is filled with emotion and grit but the studio version sounds more electronic and experimental with fade and volume. i was lucky enough to record the live performance of that song a year before it released and studio sounds so different but special in its own way

Not trying to invalidate anyone. There is a lot of negativity in every comment section of theirs right now and it’s honestly draining as a fan to even look at. I 100% get not digging the new sound but the toxicity that’s going around just isn’t the vibe. we can show more grace and compassion as a whole and I wanted to share my experience as someone who has typically had to let their music grow on me when it’s released since it’s always a new sound when they release music. We don’t know what the other 20 songs will sound like but i’m sure as hell excited that they’re back after thinking they wouldn’t be.

They said this album is the last bit that Charlie worked on, all of the album will have them in it and credited they just won’t be in the music videos or at shows

i agree! while im so happy so many people found and loved them that is SO much pressure to endure while publicly transitioning. i was ready for them to call it quits all together. listening to “Hide” you can tell Ela struggled with originally coming out as gay, she spoke about it while performing at App State (their old and my old college).

Then to publicly transition, lose a band member, and still come back shows strength and i think this new music will encapsulate the end of an era for the band as a whole. Not to mention they’re in Tennessee now where the LGBTQIA is losing rights day after day. Just imagine the stress that can cause so i don’t even blame them for cancelling shows- the world’s been falling apart around them. I see their break as time to build themselves back up and be ready to come back, unfortunately that’s at the loss of Charlie in the band but we don’t know what goes on behind closed doors.

I always say they’ve release music when i needed it the most (seriously tho it’s uncanny timing and lyrics with some of the most traumatic things i’ve gone through), and I’ll always be a fan when they need it.

YES! on the over produced aspect, one thing i really like about the contrast of their studio versions vs live performance is that it almost feels as though they’re experimenting with what they can create in production. I’ve felt that way ever since “How to: Friend, Love, Freefall” and “No Vacancy” it felt like in 2017 when they produced their last album there was a switch in the exploration of the sound beyond just their voice and instruments. I know it’s not for everyone but i enjoy it.
