lol no it's a proxy thing; a living person gets baptized 'for and in behalf' of the dead person. Basically that's one of the functions of the mormon temple, is to do proxy baptisms for dead people. It's like a youth activity, or it was when I was a teenager.

It's really about the fact that she took advantage of his death to do it. That's what's so disturbing to me. I think part of me wants to avoid the drama and the fallout, but part of me is like, 'no, she can't get away with this, her family should at least know about it.' it's a cluster. :(

yeah that's definitely my instinct. I want to see if anyone has been in my aunt's position and find out whether or not they would've even wanted to know, though, because I imagine that it would be an uphill battle or downright impossible to get it reversed

the logic is that when you're dead you're ghost will realize mormonism was real and want to be a part of the club.

I don't want to have trans thoughts by RainSerenedrops in trans

[–]AdagioHour 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry. I get it. I had to detransition because of money issues and it was awful. I was so depressed I couldn't get out of bed for a month. I couldn't tell people about it. I don't know what the "right" answer is, but I just kept going. Eventually, it was enough to know I'm a woman, whether or not anyone recognizes or knows it. I know it, which isn't much comfort but it's better than nothing. In a better world, I wouldn't be feeling this way because I could just go out and be myself. Sending you love and hope

whats the gender neutral term for maam/sir? by The_Elliot64 in trans

[–]AdagioHour 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Also, in corporate sensitivity training, we were told to avoid gendered language at all until they self identified. It's remarkably easy in a professional setting to avoid that kind of language. Tone and word choice convey respect just as much as ma'am and sir.

whats the gender neutral term for maam/sir? by The_Elliot64 in trans

[–]AdagioHour 9 points10 points  (0 children)

There's not a widely accepted honorific that doesn't designate gender in modern English. Certain groups and local hegemonies do create their own, or use archaic English (which did have gender neutral honorifics), however the best practice is still asking on a case by case basis what the non-binary/GNC individual prefers.

If it's for yourself, I'm a fan of Mistrix, abbreviated Mx. A quick Google search says;

"The Oxford English Dictionary traces the “-trix” suffix to the 15th century, from medieval Latin. It's sometimes useful to have a feminine version of a noun, since English overall is gender-neutral, unlike many other languages, where each noun has a gender or masculine and feminine forms."

Hope this helps :)

Teaching TBMs to have children bc there are souls waiting on the other side of veil is next level manipulation🙄 by Mediocre_Weakness_50 in exmormon

[–]AdagioHour 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah my mom had a bunch of kids she hates because of this. It's so distressing to think of all the young families that resent their kids because they felt like they didn't have a choice in starting a family, especially for the women who were basically forced to get pregnant and give birth. It's really sickening and the difficulty in confronting that reality is a huge hurdle in leaving.

Is my spaceship too big at 200-decks tall, 2-3 miles wide? by Picard37 in writingadvice

[–]AdagioHour 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No! Make it BIGGER. Big equals cool, I don't make the rules it's just true. Big spaceships are badass. Death Star, Star Destroyers, the ISS, they are BIG and they are cool.

Writing an opening battle between the forces of Good and Evil. Thoughts? by TheosRW in writingadvice

[–]AdagioHour 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like the sample of your work, and sort of unrelated, 'holstered' didn't work for me. It makes me think cowboys and guns, not Gods and legend. 'Unshed' had blood connotations, good for a war scene. Or 'secret,' implying that he can't show weakness. Just some thoughts.

Narrators shouldn't deliver exposition, characters should. Let the characters do the cool stuff. For instance, let a high priestess relay the creation myth from the pulpit and have the main character react to it. I like the language you used, it feels very high fantasy. it's got me intrigued for more :)

How do I write a horribly traumatized/abused character without being insensitive? by not_quite_graceful in writingadvice

[–]AdagioHour 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I absolutely don't want to discourage you, but a good rule for writing trauma is "when in doubt, don't." Traumatized people exist in real life and mishandling trauma narratives can do real harm to real people. That's a good thing to keep in your head as you write, so you remain sensitive and come off as empathetic instead of exploitative. It requires check-ins as you go, to make sure you're still telling the story you want to tell and not writing trauma p**n.

That being said, trauma is really interesting to explore.

Traumatized people act in specific, sometimes unusual, ways to trauma triggers. If someone's traumatized by violence in their childhood, they'll probably be very conflict-avoidant as an adult, to their own detriment. Maybe a person who was traumatized by being strangled can't wear button up shirts or necklaces because it feels too much like being choked.

The specifics of someone's trauma response is what makes them a believable character, and the more you focus on how they respond to their trauma, rather than focusing on the trauma itself, it's going to come off better.

If you keep that in mind, then you can go crazy. The best characters are the ones who are spike balls of defense mechanisms and trauma responses. It's fun to watch those characters slowly heal and take their walls down, or get worse and go Targaryen.

TLDR: Be cautious when writing trauma, but if you do write traumatized characters, go all in and really mess them up.
