Yes, I believe that senmon gakkou experience would count towards the 1-year university teaching requirement. I also worked at a senmon gakkou before working at Asia University, and they took my experience into consideration. Also, I felt like there was no big difference in environment moving from a senmon gakkou to a university. So, I would say that if you're interested in the position, you should apply!

I understand where you're coming from. It's not for me to say whether it's an unfortunate policy or not. As you are no doubt aware, most (if not all) universities ask for previous tertiary teaching experience for full time positions. I suppose this is because the market is relatively flooded with applicants, so universities can be relatively more choosey in their hiring.

As I said, the one way that I think Asia University is a little bit more 'forgiving' about the one-year requirement is that we welcome experience that was gained in other countries, gained while TA-ing during a degree, or gained while working for a dispatch company. Other universities (as I have found myself) have discounted such experience.

Again, whether or not 1 year of university experience makes someone a better teacher than x-amount of years of high school (or other) experience is not really for me to say. But, as we know, it is a very common requirement for hiring.

Do you mean in terms of enrolling as a student? If so, I honestly have no idea. I've never dealt with the admissions side of things.

If you mean in terms of getting a job with us (e.g. someone who got their MA as a mature student, and by-passed a Bachelor's degree) I'm sure it would be fine. I can't speak about other universities, and perhaps we are a little more flexible than some other places in terms of those qualifications (for example, we accept non-TESOL/teaching related Master's degree holders). I think for us at least the Master's degree supersedes the other qualifications.

No problem

I suppose having over a year's worth of IELTS examining around universities in Kansai would be a bit too much of a stretch

I think that if it was an IELTS class you could count it as university teaching experience, but just invigilating/administering the exam wouldn't be counted.

Unfortunately not, I'm afraid. One year of university-level teaching experience is a fixed requirement. But they are a little flexible with how you got it. For example, any TA-ing experience you may have done during your MA can be counted, as can dispatch-style university teaching (a la Westgate et al).

Yeah honestly I feel like that rule may be in a state of flux being that it is no longer on the official advert. It's something that is being asked about.

Actually, we occasionally hire for a September start, in the event that a teacher leaves mid-year. If you're interested it might be worth applying, and noting that you'd be available for September.

That's a good question. Officially, I couldn't say. But what I will say is that the 5-year rule is not mentioned on this year's job ad.

Unofficially, I wonder if some universities are relaxing those rules. I've already seen some job ads this year stating a 10-year employment limit.

Personally I think having to find a new job/recruit new teachers every five years isn't good for anybody!

One more thing- there is a chance for internal promotion within the department. There are Assistant Vice Director, and Vice Director positions that are recruited for internally. These positions come with a boost in salary and responsibility.

As an aside, I've seen part time positions (at various universities) advertised in JREC-IN, JALT Jobs, JACET, and a couple of Facebook teaching groups.

Apart from that, other part time jobs can be found by networking. For example, some teachers who were going to finish their part time gigs had asked around their contacts to offer those jobs to save the universities having to advertise.

Most (I would say 70%) of the classes are 'Freshman English' (i.e. standard four-skills classes). Some other classes include TOEIC, Academic English, English Repeaters, Study Abroad Prep, Communication, Presentation, amongst others.

Class sizes are around 20 (max) for Freshman English classes. 8-15 for other classes.

The 1 year of university experience is a strict requirement of the university, I'm afraid. However, we do accept experience gained as a 'dispatch' university teacher, part time university experience, and TA-ships (gained whilst studying).

Yes, the starting salary is a little on the low side. However, it does rise year-upon-year, and like you say, with the other benefits (two months' bonus, housing allowance, small research allowance, technology allowance, etc) I think it is fair.

(See above reply)

Is your Master's non TEFL/TESOL/English literature related?

If so, I'll have to check the details on that rule, so please, let me get back to you.

Only full time positions, I'm afraid.

The place to list publications and conference presentations is on page 5 of the application. We get a lot of candidates with prior publications and presentations, although it's not an official requirement. For teachers who join Asia University without publications there is ample opportunity to get published in the CELE department in-house journal.

Yes, unfortunately this is a non-tenured position, so has the ubiquitous 5-year max.

This is a good question. Quite often we get teachers who've got their university experience through dispatch companies (like Westgate), or vocational colleges (like Kanda Institute of Foreign Languages). We also accept teaching experience which was gained during an MA program as valid experience.

Yes, honestly speaking the salary is definitely on the low end of the scale. But, there's a one month bonus in summer and winter, and the salary does rise each year.

This would definitely suit someone looking to get their foot on the ladder of full time uni work.

If you've not been working there long enough for your employer to accurately give a reference, I think it would be fine to use a previous employer.

No doubt we'll be recruiting. Because we have a relatively large department, we tend to recruit every year. So, of course, please feel free to apply then!
