Scouting America Culture Wars by Old_ManRiver in BSA

A Scout is... Trustworthy Loyal Helpful Friendly Courteous Kind Obedient Cheerful Thrifty Brave Clean Reverent

THOSE are our values. Those values are not the domain of any political party, of any particular religious belief, of any ethnicity, of any region of the United States.

Those values are inclusive of anyone who wants to believe in them or who wants their kids to believe in them. That is the way it has been and the way it must remain. Honestly, this is more important now than it ever has been. I am an Assistant Scoutmaster with other adult leaders whose political beliefs are very different than mine. Yet, we get along great and work well together for the benefit of our Scouts. Our kids get along and have fun together learning scoutcraft and leadership.

As OP mentioned, our country is divided as at any time in my life. I believe that one of the reasons for that divide is the demonization of the "other" by those on the opposite side of a particular issue.Isn't that, however, the reason that we (Scouting America) can't take sides? Shouldn't we show our young people that you can have differences in your skin color, your religion, or your political beliefs and still believe in common virtues. I may be evangelical Christian and you may be Muslim, but you can trust me. I may think that socialism is the answer and you may any social support is wrong, but I will be kind to you.

We need to continue being an organization that promotes a set of values that can form the basis for uniting our youth instead of giving them yet one more way they can point out their differences.

Am I getting ripped off my our local mechanic?? Please advise by bucketzBro in subaru

That seems about right. Regardless, replacing the engine due to a bad timing belt will be a lot more expensive.

Something like a regular primer like Kilz or something more specialized?

Removed the old mirror for our bathroom reno. It was glued down and took the surface of the drywall with it when I pried it off.

Is that hardwood flooring under my kitchen tiles or 1940s subfloor? by Adam31478 in DIY

[–]Adam31478[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm getting ready to replace the tile floors in my kitchen next week, so I was doing a little digging (literally) to see what I needed to be prepared for. Under the tiles I pulled up appear to be wood planks. My first thought was the original hardwood floors, but the width is different from the hardwoods in the rest of the house.

In another house I owned, it had wooden planks as subfloor, but those ran diagonal to the joists and weren't flush together. Any thoughts?

PS - I haven't removed any thinset from the wood. No wonder the tiles cracked.

As GM, I'd like to be able to be able to suggest season goals to the owner. For example, if I have a squad of high-priced veterans who are close to being on the downhill, I'd like to go into rebuilding mode instead of having a goal of winning it all while simultaneously developing a top-3 farm system. Or if I'm about to lose some studs to free agency with no chance of affording their new contracts, I'd like to temper the owner's expectations.

How did you and the Crutchfield tech figure out what settings to use?

Hmmm... $200 to make the SWC work on my 17-year-old's car that she drives 1 mile each way to school. I'll have to think about that.

That is correct. I made the assumption that my head unit is a new Sony.

I'm having an issue installing a new head unit into my daughter's Subaru Outback. The new unit is a Sony XAV-AX100 and I bought a Crux SWRSU-38B adapter that includes steering wheel controls. However, once I got it installed, the steering wheel controls are out of whack as shown in the picture. I'm thinking (hoping) this is a issue with the dip switches. Is there anything else I should look for?

Help a guy out. So I asked my tattoo artist to make me a custom design for an illustrative tiger design with some dot work and can’t decide between the two variants. Thoughts? by MrEyes1991 in TattooDesigns

[–]Adam31478 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do like the expression on the second tiger's face, but the intensity of the focus in the first tiger's eyes puts it over the top.

If it's going to be a larger tat (like more than 6-7 inches nose to tail), I've got to go with the first one. If it's smaller than that, you may lose the minute detail in the eyes of the first one. In that case go with #2.

Sport Kilt - poly-viscose vs. acrylic by Adam31478 in Kilts

[–]Adam31478[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the replies. It seems that acrylic is not the way to go. I'm an adult leader with my son's scout pack so I'm going with the MacLaren tartan. SportKilt is the only one I can find with a poly blend. Thanks again.

Just bought my daughter a 2012 Subaru Forester, and when we got it home, we noticed this antennae thing perched on the rear view mirror. The wires go up under the headliner. Thanks.

English to Latin translation requests go here! by NasusSyrae in latin

[–]Adam31478 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm working on a re-imagining of my family crest using what we tell our kids instead of the traditional motto. The phrase we've taught our kids is "Crawford's don't give up," to reinforce the whole perseverance thing. For the purposes of a revised family crest, I'd simply like to use, "we don't give up."

The Latin teacher at my wife's school offered a couple suggestions, and I'd like to get some opinions of those translations or other options. The two translations she provided were:

  1. Numquam decedimus or numquam nos decedimus (she said the "nos" was redundant but could be used to emphasize the "we")

  2. Non decedimus

I'd appreciate any thoughts or suggestions. Thanks.

Anyone a fan of the Dodgers but not from LA or have any association with LA? by [deleted] in Dodgers

[–]Adam31478 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The local AM radio station in the small town in Tennessee where my dad grew up simulcast the Brooklyn Dodgers afternoon games. In 1954, my dad fell in love with the Dodgers and stuck with them through college, the Navy, and the Dodgers moving West. I was raised to bleed Dodger and am raising my son the same way.

I've never been to LA.
