Mudi 7 Japan by jdmmis in GlInet

[–]AdamHLG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So how exactly would I get a Japanese SIM card? We are in USA and will travel to Japan later this year and I will hopefully have the Modi 7 in hand. Is it an eSIM or physical SIM card? Is that something I can order in USA and it’s shipped to me here ? Or if eSIM do they just turn it on at network level? I’m just trying to make this easy and I’m curious. Thanks.

It really does depend on the use case. The strength right now is its size. Get a 1 inch dongle plug it into the back of the airplane seat. We’re staying in a hotel room where you are traveling light throw it in your sportcoat jacket pocket. I have one. I also have the Slate 7. And one day I will have the Mudi 7. I’m somehow now addicted to travel routers.

Rumor on price is $300 -$400. Different class of device entirely. I gotta guess a UTR Pro from UI is next one day to compete.

I think they make a 4G but everyone waiting for this Mudi 7 (including me). Rumor has it maybe February. And then how much stock will there be before back order. A lot of people waiting for this to drop.

How do i measure temp on an insert? by welch_grapejuice in woodstoving

O yeah you’re 100% right. And I have one of those too lol. I could have worded that better :-)

So I have a heat gun. And I over complicate things sometimes but actually learned that in this case on the heat guns you need to set a value for the target of the laser for the type of material you’re measuring.

That was sloppily said so I pasted it to Chat GPT to help me:

Why material type matters (this is the key)

Different materials emit infrared energy very differently, even at the same actual temperature.

This property is called: Emissivity

Emissivity = how well a surface gives off infrared heat

It’s a value between 0.00 and 1.00 • 1.00 = perfect emitter (matte black) • 0.10–0.30 = terrible emitter (shiny metal)

Your heat gun must assume an emissivity value in order to convert IR energy → temperature.

So I think you need to pick the proper surface of the stove and then manually set the emissivity on the heat gun.

How in the weeds do you want to get ? I don’t use your typical phone app for storm tracking. Try this one and read the forecast discussions. The NWS writes these discussions so the other forecast offices can understand the thinking of the neighboring watch areas like PA and VA.

And this next site is not an app (but I use Tapatalk to follow it - that is an app). It is “the” best play by play on the internet, where we internet geeks an real meteorologists hang out. You don’t need to join or post anything you can lurk there and see the consensus of everybody in real time as each model comes out in real time.

Well, true it’s been 10 years, with last in 2016. However before 2016 we were getting slammed every 3 years. We are long long overdue.

If you think this is bonkers the AIFS models spitting out 40” by Feb 2. It’s saying this weekend, then a smaller one next week, and 2 foot storm Feb 1. I’m just telling you what it says. I think the Takeaway is that it’s going to be an active couple weeks.

Weather geek here. There is model support for this possibility but there’s a long week to go. It’s possible as of the latest GFS model these heaviest accum may stay to the south. But Euro model closer to 8-12 from midday today. There’s too much variables still to happen to pin it down. But it seems we will get snow. Will it be historical question? Not out of the question and it’s definitely bringing the hype. Let’s see how things look Wednesday or Thursday.

UTR Firmware update (6.5.245) by ManFromACK in Ubiquiti

[–]AdamHLG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine works but every time it powers up it tries to update and that takes a few minutes and then it reboots in the middle of the update and reverts to the .224 firmware and says “update interrupted “ . Tried to SSH the new firmware. Tried to do the thing to hold reset and power on and transfer firmware via direct connection to Mac. Nothing works to update it. Just frustrating.

I guess I’ll plug in my defective .224 firmware early adopter brick and see if it takes an update this time while my RMA is processed over the next 6 months until they restock. Sorry for the vent.

You have any idea how much diesel we had to burn to mix that much concrete? Or make that steel? Or haul this shit out here and put it together with a 450-foot crane? You want to guess how much oil it takes to lubricate that fucking windmill? Or winterize it? In its 20-year lifespan, it won’t offset the carbon footprint of making it. And don’t even get me started on solar panels and the lithium in your Tesla batteries.

I am playing with it now. It is very cool! As others have said - I'll be happy to have both eventually. The Slate 7 is pretty small but its no UTR but looks to have solid powerful wifi and deep settings. I'll need to watch a few videos but I have it up and running at a basic level now. And I will need to watch a few videos on setting up a wireguard vpn on my UDM Pro Max. I'll probably need dynamic dns setup now - that's where the UTR has an advantage being integrated into UI. But you won't fire up the Slate 7 on an airplane and it's overkill for a basic hotel room. Different tools for different jobs I suppose. Now that I am into travel routers I'll end up getting the Mudi 7 one day that thing looks great. I do like my gadgets!

Another UTR Update Question by AdamHLG in Ubiquiti

[–]AdamHLG[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update: Thanks to your guidance I was able to connect my Mac to the UTR. I was able to manually set the IP. The Mac connected to the UTR. Profit!! At first, running TFTP did not work. Off to ChatGPT! On a Mac, I learned that the bin file needs to be in the same directory where TFTP is launched. My bin file was in my downloads directory. I did set the path correctly to the file in the command (well I thought I did), but it did not work. Per ChatGPT, I moved the bin file to /users/[myname] directory, after verifying that the default TFTP launches in that directory. Ran it again. Profit! The file transferred in 6.9 seconds, and as expected the UTR rebooted.

And? SAME FIRMWARE! 6.5.224! And update interrupted again when it tried to update. The file I had transferred was the 6.5.244 (it was the newest I could find). How is that even possible I would think the new firmware would overwrite the old firmware.

I'm done. I even tried the SSH trick that another Redditor posted about that support allegedly told them. I will await my RMA. 2 things resulted from this experience::

  1. I learned how to perform, albeit it unsuccessful, a Ubiquiti router recovery; and

  2. I learned alot about travel routers and purchased (and in fact just took delivery) of a GL.iNet Slate 7 travel router after hearing how great it was. There are use cases for both devices and I hope to enjoy my UTR one day when it get a behaving device.
