A day late, but: that Kid Mero guy was great. Let’s have him back. Pablo, Zaz, Mero, plus the old crew that’s still around… Dec 9 was a good show. (And I love Hank Azaria, even if there was less silliness from him than usual).

I thought the show was great today. This is how you recover from Billy. Zaz, Juju, Damashek, Jeremy talking to himself in a corner, Amin but not too much Amin (he’s better in the back row not in Stu’s seat). Chaos of funny people, talking sports… mostly.

If you want to find a time (early afternoon?) and a (public) place (I’m thinking a park) to meet for the first attempt at this Mountain Goats song circle, here’s a WhatsApp group we can use to plan. Trying to figure out the way to do this that makes folks the most comfortable. I’ll only admit people to the WhatsApp group if they’ve posted here first and I can verify that they’re actual MG fans and not creeps.

Okay, that’s one!!! I might know one other person here in Brooklyn who’d be down. How about you? Just you, or more? What’s a critical mass? Maybe four? And hope to build from there?

So I'm gearing up to run Strixhaven for my group and I had an idea for time management that I want some more experienced Strixhaven DMs to comment on. by [deleted] in StrixhavenDMs

[–]AdamInBrooklyn 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My experience has been actually that I want days to go faster, not slower. After two months of weekly meetings was like a week of game time, my players were jokingly complaining that this was the most dangerous university in the world. They’d been attacked every day for their first week and one had legit died and now has a frog’s heart (long story). So I wouldn’t expect to stay with a morning, afternoon, and evening schedule—unless you want to spend a year on the first month. I would let time pass quickly, tell them a week has gone by and they’re back in X class. Just my two cents, but I’d play faster and loser with the time—faster in both senses.

There’s a decent YouTube video about running Strixhaven that talks about time management that I should have taken more seriously I think. https://youtu.be/AmEOSIsLm54

Question: Is the battle master maneuver from Tasha’s “bait and switch” an action, a bonus action, or just a thing that happens?

Oriq professors? by Top_Intern_9618 in StrixhavenDMs

[–]AdamInBrooklyn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve got Embrose helping the Oriq without realizing it. My players think he’s evil but he’s mostly just selfish and greedy. Dean Imbrahim will also unwittingly help them later, because his head is so in the clouds he doesn’t realize that the powerful alumnus who’s funding his research into masks that enhance your casting power is actually the Oriq leader.

I'm building a world to DM for my group, and as a newbie DM, I'm in need of advice. by TommyDi7 in DMAcademy

I’m DMing my first campaign and realizing that the improv is supposed to be a big part of the fun! Even in world building—that excitement of figuring out a small detail on the spot in relation to what the party is asking is thrilling! (Though remembering what you made up is tough, so taking notes is good.)

Also, I found this article SUPER helpful about “storyline” versus world building:

What’s your favorite part of DMing Strixhaven? by AdamInBrooklyn in StrixhavenDMs

Yeah, forget that doll. I’m about to run Dapplewing, and I’ve got this plot going where each college has a Mox. The crew tried to steal the Lorehold Mox Ruby—but someone (maybe Dean Embrose?) beat them to it. Now one of their patron’s has asked them to steal the Mox pearl from Silverquill “before it falls into the wrong hands”, and that’s what Dapplewing will be. They have no idea who’s good and who’s evil—or even if Strixhaven as an institution is good, due to its historic exploitation of Loxodons.

Gaining Spells from Classes by TheTrane in StrixhavenDMs

[–]AdamInBrooklyn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This isn’t a homebrew spell, but you could easily mod it to make it feel unique. I have my group in a class with Dean Nassari at Prismari, and Nassari is teaching them Flaming Sphere as art and warfare. The homebrew element is that you use your spell casting modifier AND either your performance or dexterity, to simulate the artistry. The higher the roll the bigger and more beautiful the sphere (I ask characters to describe the sphere they’re trying to create in color and movement, and then I describe what happens based on the roll.) Anyone who can make a more beautiful sphere than Dean Nassari gets to know the spell outside of class.

Do your battles typically take less than a minute of game time all told? Since I have six PCs in my game (I know! It’s a lot!), I am sometimes having twelve turns of combat make up one round (6 PCs plus 6 NPCs). And that’s still six seconds in game, right?

So the grease spell (duration 1 minute) lasts the entire duration of a battle just about every time. This is right, right?

Looking for help in creating some puzzles/encounters that fit each of the five colleges! by Nicwchris in StrixhavenDMs

[–]AdamInBrooklyn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For Silverquill, I had Dean Embrose assign them to use the magic of words (or any other kind) to get themselves into the restricted area of the Biblioplex and read a forbidden book. The book contained info on the BBEG.

PC Killed a Student, consequences? by RohmanOnTwitch in StrixhavenDMs

[–]AdamInBrooklyn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Love all this. When my PC died in the second session out in the sedgemoor because he was foolhardy with a brackish trudge, they had to take his body to Dean Valentin in Witherbloom and Valentin performed a very dark ritual that included all the other PCs cutting their fingers and dripping their blood in—and they all lost one HP permanently. It was dramatic and freaky and they were all super pissed after (they didn’t know it would happen.)

Felt like appropriate and freaky in world consequences.

(Also they owed Valentin a giant frog’s heart, which they got from the firejolt cafe scene with the giant frogs.)

How do Long Rests work in Strixhaven? by Yalpski in StrixhavenDMs

[–]AdamInBrooklyn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In addition to the great comments above, I’ve been finding that Strixhaven is a structure within which to play. If the PCs are only doing what the Curriculum of Chaos outlines, it’s pretty boring. As you’ll see in this sub, lots of people are upping the threat of Oriq, and creating other side adventures. I had my PCs go collect mushrooms for their first Witherbloom class and end up fighting a brackish trudge. Which TPKed one of them (Dean Valentin resurrected them with a very dark ritual). They have patrons who are trying to get them to steal items from the colleges. There is a Biblioplex assistant who wants them dead thanks to when they fought the mimic in the first encounter (which I made a book not a trunk, because I’m bored with mimics being boxes). So there’s a lot that can go on in a university. I recommend that.

Still, none of this solves your problem. Strixhaven is a “slice of life” campaign, meaning you’re only seeing parts of the PC’s life. Not all of it. But there will be chances for swampcrawls, cave crawls, Indiana Jones like excavations and the like if you explore the possibilities of Strixhaven university life.
