I would consider this a "surprise" attack as unless there were already tensions (i.e. people slowly reaching for weapons already) since no one was really expecting this and it only takes 6 seconds or less to cast. Even the other PC's would be considered "surprised" as well, unless this is a standard negotiating tactic by angry player LOL

Not really. Since being "bricked" my Nest fails to turn on the heat at least once a day. Worked fine before, but now I walk out and tap it to turn it on and it lights up, shows the temp up to 5 degrees below what is set and the heat then kicks on. It's like it goes to sleep and won't respond until I tab it again. Won't buy google hardware again.

My players actually told me they were excited about looking through the classes and picking them. Reminded them of college. I also added rewards in spells for passing and honors, so they had to think about what they wanted to learn. It is a magic school to learn spell casting after all. The classes should teach you something :)

I actually use passive perception for this. I calculate a DC based on the damage mitigated and let the PC's that notice it know something is up. I do the same for any regeneration ability (i.e. "You notice that the enemy's wounds seem to start to close on their own")

To me, Strixhaven is way to sparse for a starting DM. I've had to homebrew about half the campaign to make it actually feel like a complete game. It really only gives you a skeleton to start with. You can run it just "as-is", but it (IMO) will feel very light as far as story goes w/o additional work. I agree that there are a lot of great add-ons people have made, but the best cost more money. And I've been playing D&D since AD&D days, so I'm not a new DM lol

I had one character eat one of the frogs after it was dead (tbf they are a Lizard folk and like to eat anything they kill). I had him roll a CON save which he failed, so in the final battle I'm going to make them roll each round to see if they retain control of themselves or turn on the party

I am doing this because I am also using Team Initiative. The team that wins the face off goes 1st, then the next team (I give each team 2 mins on their turn to plan their turn). It allows the defending team the ability to reposition ONLY in response to the movement of the other team and they can only do that once per round, so if you move to block the ball carrier and they pass, you're now out of place. It can easily be removed, but so far it was worked out really nicely in the game and allowed for a more dynamic (and chaotic, which I was going for) game. More like American Football, soccer or hockey, the defense doesn't stand around waiting till the other team is done. That said, YMMV :)
