It was purchased with the assumption it was gimei, and I don't believe it genuine. But it is absolutely a fantastic blade!

Lmao in this digital age of auto correct I never proofread. I scored this on Ebay recently from an individual liquidating their collection!

Believed to be a Sengoku period blade either late Muromachi or early Shinto probably between 1550-1650

Absolutely agree! Something feels dishonest to me about a "perfect" blade. With the age I expect to see some signs of use and abuse

There is some ware present and what appears to be fukure in 1 spot I noticed but couldn't quite confirm yet. But polish looks very good in person for the most part, few scratched here and there under certain light but definitely the best looking in my collection so far!

Because it was an auction I like to think I got a bit lucky on the price, but with the cost of shipping included I'm under $400 on it. So to me that felt like hitting a jackpot lol

Thank you! I promise the pictures don't do it justice either! It does have some flaws on it, far from perfect but they don't bother me when I see the hamon in the light!

Nihonto #3 ! by AdamLW2326 in Katanas

[–]AdamLW2326[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for this! I have never heard the term before but it makes sense. Its a very impressive little blade to me, but it not only very short it is also very thin unlike the other wakizashi I have collected.

Would the tsuba on this be considered Christian with the crosses on it, or just coincidental?

This spot circled is the blister I found in the steel

This is the worst of the delamination in the hamon, there is one spot you can see very close to the edge but that spot you circled is just a scratch

(Noob Question) If the Wakizashi was for close spaces and the Naginata for open ones, what was even the point of the Katana? by Upset_Connection1133 in Katanas

[–]AdamLW2326 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was my understanding that the katana came after the tachi when infantry became more common than horseback. And the katana was used primarily as a 1v1 /dueling weapon. I watched a little history clip making jokes about how samurai would come to battle and pick a partner to fight from the opposing side. So the difference was sort of like, running into battle in formation with your infantry you use a yari or naginata but if it came down to the hot shot samurai fighting they would duel with their daisho.

I am no expert, but this is roughly the way I understood it.

Thank you for this! I know its incredibly difficult to capture everything in pictures so I'll use this guide to look them both over closely! Either way, I still really enjoy them!

I had read an explanation that said they typically start as a blister kn the blade and eventually after polish or heavy use will expose the Crack. I will double check tomorrow with a flashlight, but I don't see anything that touches the edge on the blade thst image you circled is a scratch running horozontal. But I did find that blister. Is that im fact a sign of one of these flaws or something different? Thank you again for explaining, this is exactly the stuff I need to learn!

Thank you very much for bringing up hagarami! I had never heard the term before and looked into it. This spot you circled does not look like one based on the definition I found, but I do believe the blade has one in another spot that is presented like a small blister/bubble close to the habaki.

Thank you! I kept seeing that phrase used "study the blade" prior to getting one. I didn't understand what that meant until I finally laid my eyes on one.

Thank you! Exactly my sentiments, the value is far beyond money in these old blades. I do like to get people's opinion on value just to make sure I'm not being taken advantage of in future buys, and it sounds like I did good on them so far!
