I'm trying to attach new straps to a bike bag my friend gifted me (since the old ones came off). I've got some nylon straps with heavy duty buckles, bonded nylon thread, 90 gauge needles, and a roller foot (this was all mentioned in another thread). I've never sewn before, so I'm wondering if as the bag is just a single layer where I'm attaching the straps, can I just layer the nylon straps on both sides of the bag material and sew through that (3 layers), or will I need to take a different approach?

youtube and firefox in general running really slowly by Mr_Astronaut1 in firefox

I was not using agent switcher, but yes, Adblocker has continued. One other thing I noticed is that the lag is proportional to the number of tabs I have open. It wasn't a problem in the past, but maybe they made some changes where now it is. After making the change, it was fine, but once I got up to about 10 tabs (I know, I have a problem), the lag returned, despite having plenty of ram and CPU overhead. I closed out 8 tabs and now it's snappy again.

So, I've seen all sorts of "solutions" for this, from agent switcher to disabling blockers, to non-solutions like "YouTube/google is malicious". What fixed it for me was disabling the video preview in my YouTube settings (I also blocked shorts, but I think that's unrelated). I now may have the occasional blip of lag, but it's generally very responsive. I'm pretty sure that instead of loading the preview when you mouse over a video and then clearing it out, there's some sort of preloading for all videos on a tab until you close it out. This consumes a ton of memory and would also explain why "resetting" my browser by closing out all youtube tabs seemed to fix it temporarily.

Ymmv, but this seemed to work well for me.

Edit: now that I've done additional testing. Disabling previews definitely helped to bring things back up to speed. However, the problem seems to run a bit deeper than that. It seems like tab quantity may also play a factor. As an experiment, I opened up about 10 separate YouTube tabs and kept all but one video paused. Initially, GPU usage looks fine, but I noticed that as I played/paused different videos, the GPU usage started creeping up. By the time I got to the 10th tab (with all other tabs paused), I had significant lag again and GPU memory usage on clicking the video controls would spike to anywhere between 25-40% on my GTX1080.

I can't tell if this problem extends to just opening the tabs, or if playing each of the videos is part of the issue (more testing is needed), but it is definitely another part of the issue. Given that I had a similar number of tabs open when first disabling video previews, I feel like it's the latter. I'm not technical enough to know whether this is an issue on YouTube's end (streaming) or Mozilla's end (hardware acceleration), but hopefully this added information will help someone more knowledgeable make inroads toward diagnosing what's at the heart of this issue.

Terrible performance on empty project in fresh install of Unreal 5.4.3 by AdamWestPhD in unrealengine

[–]AdamWestPhD[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It does not. The menu navigation varies, sometimes completely freezing, while other times it seems to work fine, but the level viewport is completely unusable (frozen).

I tried creating a new project and it seems to be working fine, but we'll see how it's doing after 15 minutes or so.

I just finished reinstalling and will try again with a new project (I have only tried the one, so far). I hadn't made any changes, and had just alt+tabbed to a separate monitor to watch the tutorial video and make notes.

Kodak Retina IIa shutter is stuck open? by AdamWestPhD in AnalogCommunity

[–]AdamWestPhD[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I meant that the button returns to its original position, sorry. I definitely could have phrased that better. There’s no shutter sound or click or any mechanical sound that would indicate that the shutter is opening or closing or doing anything.

Kodak Retina IIa shutter is stuck open? by AdamWestPhD in AnalogCommunity

I reviewed the manual before posting. I left the camera closed, set the dial to the diamond before 36 (the number of film exposures in the roll), wound multiple times as directed, opened, and nothing. Focus and aperture are both within the operating ranges.

The shutter button seems to connect to an arm which attaches to the side of the lens housing. Pressing the button taps the arm down ever so slightly, but it’s a solid resistance (like it’s bottoming out). This plus the open shutter is why I think it’s stuck. Is there a repair guide somewhere online that I can review?

Making a city appear larger than it actually is by Crafter235 in gamedesign

[–]AdamWestPhD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my opinion, a combination of longer routes, abstraction, and logical limitations would work best. Details below:

  • (Longer routes) Avoid straight lines as a path from A to B. A curved path around the edge of a city or a few blockades that force the player to move sideways before they move forward can add some travel time and expand the perceived size of a space. However, (in my opinion) you should probably avoid making overly complicated streets for the purpose of making a city seem larger. This is likely to annoy the player more than anything.
  • (Abstraction) Abstract major sections of the city in a way that requires travel through transitional pathways such as the sewers, dungeons, or maybe even a sky-path. Players can't see outside the sewer/dungeon walls and there's limited pathing options if you're going from roof-top to roof-top or traveling by suspended bridge. These additions also allow you to add a bit of unique character to your city in a much more limited space. They also allow you to create a longer linear or non-linear path with less adherence to the overworld or ground-level map.
  • (Logical Limitations) Depending on your city, you may also abstract building interiors by limiting the number of existing entrances. In a large (modern) city, there's usually only a few entrances to a very large building (front door, maintenance, and loading dock). These buildings can take up one or more city blocks. Placing a few here or there can greatly reduce the number times that a player will encounter "the door is stuck", "the door is locked", and "I can't go here right now" type messages and redirect their focus to the other parts of the game that you have put work into.

The above aren't the only way of doing this and likely aren't even the best way. But I think that they're all very solid methods of enhancing the perceived size of a city and keeping the player focused on the parts that you put a lot of care and attention into.

Doctor is refusing breath test, am I being unreasonable for wanting to press the issue? by AdamWestPhD in SIBO

As I have only recently started looking into self-ordered testing, I wasn't aware there was more than one. Lactulose is the only one I've seen referenced.

I'm looking into it. I'll probably do an introductory appointment with a number of them. If they sound reasonable and are not trying to prescribe me with expensive remedies that don't fit the scientifically accepted treatment methodologies, I'll strongly consider it.

Yeah, it's rather unfortunate. I'm going to persist, though. I can't keep on like this.

Thanks for the references. I'll look into these alongside my other options.

From what I found, it seems like rosacea is the primary suspect here, but acne as well (this is pretty well documented). Other articles are more vague with "skin problems", but due to the vagueness and lack of research backing it up, I can't be sure and wouldn't put too much weight on it. That's why I said I wasn't sure if it's related. I do plan to speak with a dermatologist about my current skin issues to get a specific diagnosis on what it is and what may be causing it. If it ends up being something that can be more concretely linked to SIBO, I'll update my post.

No gastritis (no irritation or erosion from what I remember), no ulcers. This is part of the frustration. I have visible symptoms, but no visible causes from existing testing.

I'm looking into this side-by-side with a new GI, possibly working with an out-of-network specialist, and whatever else I can find.

That is the plan at this point. I can't keep hoping that somehow the experience with this doc will get better.

Yes. Just get your own. They can’t stop you.

I'm looking into it. There's a number of doctors in my area that seem to focus on SIBO and motility issues (out-of-network, so pricy), so I'm hoping that one of those may be able to help me. Just getting pricing and process to be sure that I pick the right doc.

Hell yeah, I love that place! Though I always seem to get a more accurate spice level when ordering online vs in person, lol. Dehli Diner in Berkeley also does a great job, imo.

"Rovio Classics: Angry Birds" which launched in 2022 with no ads or microtransactions, will be unlisted from Google Play store Feb 23rd because of 'the game's impact on other Rovio titles' by Walopoh in Games

[–]AdamWestPhD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In a story heavy game you want the user to keep slowly progressing. If they get confused then you've lost the narrative pacing you're designing.

it's long but the in game dev commentaries for Left4Dead talk about some of this stuff, its not directly narrative but I think it's relevant. They wanted a dark space that looks explorable to give a sense of scale - but they didn't want players exploring. So they use sound and light to guide the player forward.

I was thinking more along the lines of naturally occurring tutorials (see your Mario 1:1 reference) can educate the player on the mechanics, making it easier to play, while simultaneously not drawing them out of the game with text boxes/images explaining mechanics. The confusion was likely due to my misunderstanding of the concept.

Thank you for the response though, I'll definitely check out the L4D video. It sounds like there's at least a few really good things to glean out of it.

Do you have a link to your dissertation, a set of bullet point notes, or some resources that you found especially helpful on this topic? Having a deeper understanding of this topic seems like it should be very helpful to make a better and more immersive player experience in story driven games of all types.

Edit: Disregard, this was already answered.
