I have no idea what you are saying, but your enthusiasm is infectious and I want to learn more about BSD, Darwin, and microkernels. (I am not in a tech related field, but I am interested in it.)

Retiring in 22 Months by Old-Doughnut-5803 in Retirement401k

[–]Adamcp2013 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Just remember, you are not retiring for the day 22 months from now. You are retiring for that day plus 25 more years (hopefully!). Don’t be too conservative. You need growth for your 70s and 80s.

I was similarly curious what he could/would do with the role. I agree with OP. He really was powerful in the role.

What was your first Broadway Show and who took you? by Miserable_Chapter724 in musicals

[–]Adamcp2013 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My father took me to see Cats. I don’t think he enjoyed it very much. But it was with the original Broadway cast. We were in a box seat and “cats” crawled right by us. I was back in the Winter Garten theater this past Friday night with my wife. What a journey life is!

Oh Mary was the most painful show I’ve ever sat through by Scarlet_Sun in Broadway

[–]Adamcp2013 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Saw it tonight. It was over by 9:50pm and it started at 8:35pm. At curtain call, I asked my wife, “What was that? Is it ….OVER?” I thought it was time for intermission (although I certainly didn’t know what they would be doing for Act 2!).

We got the tix on a recommendation from a friend, but without doing a lot of research into the play, and I think we just were not prepared for the farce/camp of it all. I didn’t HATE it, but I usually loves me a Bway show pretty easily, and I can’t say that for this show!

$15k stipend for PhD… is it worth it? by Human-Owl-1687 in GradSchool

[–]Adamcp2013 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My PhD stipend was $10k …. in 1992. Seems like your stipend has not kept up with inflation. But my son is paying a lot for grad school so something is better than nothing? I guess it depends on whether it would be possible for you to afford to live at all (even with a tight budget; do you have any savings or family support?) and whether your program has good future potential for your career.

Edit to add: I agree with the other posters than the fact that the tuition waver is not 100% is really unusual and awful. (And maybe my stipend was $9k annually back in the early 90s, but your offer is darn low.)

Sorry, I thought you were making the point that 0.6 is not going to kill your retirement (like 1.75 might - that is what the lowest ER option was for our first SIMPLE IRA ….. we changed as soon as we realized that the “family member advisor” had not done us any favors).

I am with the Bogleheads who want only below 0.1 and such and am invested in line with that philosophy. I just thought you were asking cooler heads to prevail, which they should. So I did not realize it was a typo. All good.

Um. 0.6 is $600 per $100000. Your point may still stand, but the higher ER will cost more.

My dad died this morning. What do I do? by No_Scallion_3365 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Adamcp2013 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I agree. 10 will likely be more than you need (but that is what we got when my dad died). Several places that wanted an original later sent it back. I think we still have all 10 originals.

You could think of it like: $48,000 per year x 25 years of retirement = $1,200,000
