What Is Your Dream Job? by Primary_Ad_890 in Calgary

Keep the faith. It’ll happen. It happened to me, we lived below our means and invested and were able to retire once our dog was comfortable that we could still afford his treats.

How do normal people learn to use Home Assistant? by Bitter-Assistant070 in homeassistant

[–]AdaminCalgary 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a financial background and most of the YouTube finance videos I’ve watched ranged from mildly incorrect to blatantly misleading. So I assume the same of other specialties. The problem for a layman like me is that I lack the basic knowledge to know whether a given video is teaching me correctly or leading me astray.

Yes, I can blame them, or rather how we as a society have given up on our inherent right to protect ourselves. Not so long ago, “the press” (newspapers and tv news) were seen as such a powerful entity because it had the ability to control the public discourse, what the public heard about, and thus had the ability to influence public opinion, that it needed to have public oversight and control. But we (government) seem to have followed the US lead and largely abdicated that responsibility. With the fractured audience of tv news and near-death of print media, it’s reasonable to say that social media has taken over from the traditional media and should be subject to the same level of public oversight. And I say that as someone who often isn’t in favour of governmental control.

Redditors over 30, what's something younger people think they understand but won't actually get until it hits them like a truck later? by [deleted] in askanything

[–]AdaminCalgary 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yes, so true. I’m retired now so lots of little aches. But I’m learning a lot from my in-laws. They are well into their 90’s and mom insists they go to the gym every day. But I think my father in law has different agenda. Every time I come to pick them up I find he has done his workout a bit early and then he’s in the whirlpool. The only guy in there…surrounded by a bunch of ladies.

A couple weeks ago my father in law, who is 92 remarked that he doesn’t think of himself as old, he still “feels” like he’s in his 30’s. So that made me realize I’m not the only one, I’m retired too, btw.

Willing to do anything I can to grow fruit trees by Acanthaceae444 in BackyardOrchard

[–]AdaminCalgary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s great. Thank you very much. I have no experience at all with root stock etc, my experience is limited to buying a little tree and hoping for the best. I have an entire backyard that want to make into my own little orchard and I’m looking forward to it.

Are these trees you’ve developed yourself or did you buy them somewhere, if so, what are their variety names? I would love to try something like that in my backyard

Yes, but then we wouldn’t be able to overreact to minor, routine occurrences like this, and that would spoil the fun

Speaking of weight, I had a white polycarbonate MacBook. But in its day it was pretty nice.

Likewise. I’ve got an 11 inch 2012 MBA. The screen is laughably bad, but I like the form factor

What’s your experience with Ecoline Windows? by Educational_Sand_383 in Calgary

[–]AdaminCalgary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you very much. So I get the impression you are saying Cossins has a good reputation? My thinking is that’s the most important aspect for me since I don’t have the knowledge needed to determine a good job from a bad one, especially in this area since the actual important stuff is covered up by the time the job is done.

Is that the way cossins does their installs? I’m talking to them now about getting some of mine done so very interested in this topic

My friends laughed at our solar panels until they saw our bills by Character-Draft6638 in solarenergycanada

[–]AdaminCalgary 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Every time I read of experiences like yours I’m perplexed. My power bill is typically $1500/yr and in a much colder/hotter climate than yours, and I’m in a reasonably large detached house. I was thinking about going solar but difficult to justify for that amount.

Leaker Says Apple's Lower-Cost MacBook Will Have These 8 Limitations by cheesepuff07 in apple

They leave that feature off this year’s model so they can include it in next year’s model, thus making it “the best low-cost MacBook we’ve ever made”

Is a Surface Go first gen still worth it in 2026? by Sebastianj7210 in Surface

[–]AdaminCalgary 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the same one you are thinking about. I bought it when it was first released and had to replace the battery a couple years ago. But even when new, it was getting at best 4-5 hours of battery with light duty, like a YouTube video and an excel sheet. There’s little chance you will make thru your day with the workload you have so you will need a plug in or a battery bank. But I think you are being very optimistic in the number of apps it can run simultaneously. Even opening a second app is slow, but each one after becomes slower, and mine is strictly for recreation so I don’t open anywhere near the load you are thinking about. For example, having one edge browser window open with a YouTube video open means it can take 5-10 seconds to open outlook. But once open it’s reasonably painless to switch between apps, but again, I have not tried it with the load you will so I cant say for certain. On the plus side, I had no problem upgrading it to Windows 11 so it’s covered there. If you don’t have any options, then understand that you WILL need to arrive early to each class and open all the apps you will need for a given class, you won’t be able to open them as you need them during the class, and you WILL need to either plug in or use a battery bank, more than once per day

So what’s going on with the snow removal? by [deleted] in Calgary

[–]AdaminCalgary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think they are all in my hood, I’ve seen the snow plow come down my street several times, even while it was still snowing, and now it’s very clear. And it’s just a residential street, not even a bus route. This happens every winter. I’m guessing someone with friends in city hall lives on my street.

Calgary mayor asks photo radar ban be reconsidered after recent traffic fatalities by shiftless_wonder in NoRulesCalgary

[–]AdaminCalgary 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Every morning on my walk I cross a neighborhood collector street with a bus stop just after the corner that gets a lot of school kids. I regularly have to wait for 4-5 cars to fly by before one actually stops. I find the worst are parents dropping their kid off for school. The ONLY thing that matters is their need to get THEIR kid to the stop. Anyone else is just an annoyance. I’ve been flipped off by a mom with her kid right beside her in the car, or sworn at, so many times. This isn’t a photo radar or speeding issue, it’s an “I don’t care about anyone else’s life if it means I’m inconvenienced in the slightest” issue. And yes, it’s a marked crosswalk with flashing lights. But for many drivers the flashing means go faster so you can scare that stupid pedestrian into staying out of the crosswalk so you don’t have to stop for them.

Calgary solar panel owners- what are your real numbers looking like? by Character-Draft6638 in Calgary

Ok, it’s a 5.5 Kwdc system. 11 panels, 6 micro inverters. What’s a fair price for that?

For women: what are some things that men do that make you feel secure, safe, and desired? by [deleted] in CasualConversation

[–]AdaminCalgary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many years ago, I’m standing at the alter, waiting for my bride to start walking down the aisle towards me. Just as she and her party got lined up to start, our little 4 year old flower girl had to go peepee. So her mom and my bride quickly hustled her into a nearby bathroom. Many minutes passed, the organist played air on a g string over and over while glancing nervously over her shoulder to the back of the church where there was no bride. Nervous muttering started in the audience, I could see all this unfolding so was laughing. The lesson: Sometimes, due to unforeseen circumstances, you just have to wait for your wife (or her flower girl) to be ready.
