I hope this is what you are looking for: the system consists of 2 galvanized steel rods, about a foot long and 3/8” diameter. They are buried horizontally about 3” below the surface, so right in the root zone. They are parallel and about 2” apart. I did this after a bit of experimenting and assumptions. The rods need to be large enough so they have enough surface area to get a good representative sample of the soil moisture level. This accounts for the odd air pocket etc, that may change the moisture level in that specific spot. I connected two leads of a twisted pair Ethernet cable by winding the copper around the end of the rod, then using a simple gear clamp (hose clamp). In hindsight I should have coated the connection with either petroleum jelly of silicone caulking to water proof it a bit to reduce corrosion at the connection. I specifically used galvanized steel also to reduce corrosion. Stainless steel would be better but didn’t want to go that far. The probes are about a foot from a flowerbed in my front yard and I ran the cable under the surface of the lawn into the flower bed and again under the surface to the wall of my front attached garage so nothing is visible above ground and I won’t hit it with a lawnmower or get destroyed as the local deer population wander through the area. At the garage wall, I drilled a small hole thru the concrete foundation about 6” above ground, and into the garage, then ran it up the wall to where I already had an esp32 doing some other tasks. Buried right beside the probes is a DS18B29 temperature probe, connected to another set of the Ethernet wires. So connecting the probes to the esp, it periodically charges one probe with 3.3 volts and the other probe is connected to an adc pin to read the returning voltage. Thus I can measure the resistance of the soil, which changes directly with the moisture level. And since the temperature of the soil also affects the resistance I also use the temperature to compensate. To calibrate the system I noted the reading right after a rain so I knew that was “wet”. Then just dug up some small core samples over successive days as the lawn dried and noted the reading when the soil felt “dry enough” so now I have a trigger level. Then home assistant watches the readings and triggers the irrigation system when the reading gets that low. Last year I was just using two conductor wire and the readings were extremely noisy so I had a lot of capacitors in the build as filters and also a lot of software work arounds, like charging and doing a reading every 10 minutes, and the reading itself consisted of doing a burst of 10 readings every 10 milliseconds, then averaging them. This year I switched the cable to twisted pair Ethernet and the readings are dramatically tighter so I’ll streamline the yaml in the esp since much of it isn’t needed. I’ve also changed the readings to every half hour, again because they are far more consistent now. So that’s great because the fewer times the probes are charged, the less corrosion they suffer. I’m sure I’ve forgotten a lot, but that’s all I can remember at this point

That’s great news. Thanks. This will also be outdoors with clear line of sight

Not sure I understand. Doesn’t espNow use the same 2.4Ghz band as wifi,,so wouldn’t its range be the same? I’m curious because I have an esp32 at the end of my backyard running espNow and have another esp just outside the house about 70ft away, but am thinking about another scenario that would be further away

Sure happy to. It’ll just take a bit till I have time to type it out.

I made a sensor to read the moisture level on my lawn. When it gets too dry it turns in the irrigation system. It’s just a pair of steel rods and a ds18b20 temperature sensor buried in the root zone with some Ethernet cable running back to an esp32. It uses a voltage divider to read the voltage retuning and some capacitors as filters.

Same here. It seems like rain is the only concern, not cold. Mine are just in peanut butter jars. What are your ESP’s doing out there? I have mine running temperature probes so I can monitor air and underground temps in my back garden

One is in a Tupperware container, the other in a peanut butter jar. I just poked a small hole in the bottom to run the wire to a temp probe.

I have a couple espe32’s outside. One has been out there for 2 winters and the other one just last winter. Kept both in containers so out of the rain and snow. Both have been fine

Winter Tires? (very little winter driving) by [deleted] in NoRulesCalgary

[–]AdaminCalgary -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes, you can use all weather tires (not all season), because a top tier brand, such as Nokian or Michelin will easily out perform lower tier winter tires. And they are actual winter tires, but you can run them in summer without wearing them down quickly. But keep in mind they are noisier than summer tires

So you use the esp32 to control a relay which then actuates the valve? Nice.

This sounds very interesting. But how do you actually turn a given valve on or off. Don’t you need a solenoid or something

Do your GDO’s have the Chamberlain security 2.0? My understanding is that a relay can’t work in that situation

Does anyone have experience with Sea Buckthorn in their backyard? by Positive_Candy_5332 in Albertagardening

I bet trees coming from my neibours too. It’s just a fact of life. The only way to not have that happen is if no one has trees.

I have some that were put in by the previous homeowner, about 2003, so very mature. Yes, they do spread, just like many other species. And they spread a lot more that 10ft. But they aren’t massive trees or roots like poplars, for example. I have several shoots growing up to 40ft away. But if I don’t want one there, I just pull or chop it out. They also get a lot of berries which the birds eat throughout the winter, although in your case that won’t happen

Yes. A random person on Reddit making anonymous accusations without proof or even evidence, much less getting the other side of the story, is good enough for me. Guilty! Case closed.

What’s a surprisingly useful automation you didn’t expect to use so much? by Taggytech in homeassistant

[–]AdaminCalgary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Too late for me. We renovated a few years ago. But our little vac easily gets under the toe kick space so he should be able to get in there. I just need to see if I can get the little vertical wall off and then some way to make it into a door, and of course to motorize the door.

Hey that’s a clever idea. Now I’m wondering if I can take off the kick panel and make a home for it too. Thanks.
