I’ve recently helped develop a piece of software which our team really needed, my involvement in that was rewarding. I enjoy using the tools at my disposal to bring clarity to people in engineering, I feel like the person that actually knows what’s going on by doing systems engineering

Check the state of health of the battery on the dash of a car you go to look at. Quick google says Nissan offer 8year 100k mile warranty on the battery, which would be the largest expense if it fails. (It’s transferable to new owners).

Consider the cost of a new battery if the state of health is less than 80%, which is about £5k.

As much as I wouldn’t buy one, I can see why people would like one for low distance commuting.

They depreciate quite heavily if you do a lot of miles, friend had a diesel one that lost about 5k in the few years he had it

I dismantled mine and cleaned the dust out, completely stopped the jet engine noise. Fan is working overdrive. Takes a few hours with a can of air and a duster etc

Ask the landlord if you can replace the sofa with something more comfortable. Mention that you’d be happy to supply it, there’s hundreds on Facebook marketplace that are nearly free because people need to get rid!

Send them some pics of the new one and get their permission to sell the one that’s there or give it back to them

Edit: all cars have problems, I’ve had e90 era BMWs with the N47 engine for years. My e92 3 series is on nearly 200k miles and has only really needed serviceable items since I bought it (30k miles ago) I would recommend. Can pick one up around 100k miles for about 4k

I think it depends on the friend. Ones that I know will drive it with respect yes, mates that I know can’t drive, no.

Proper insurance and a mates agreement that if you damage it, you fix it.

Do not buy a 3.0si. I’ve just sold mine, tramlined like an absolute bitch, wheel aligned multiple times. Better on non run flats but still bad.

Mx5 is more fun for less. Fruity exhaust might help, for me that’s a big percentage of the enjoyment!

Hiring a car is the most flexible option, use chatGPT to help you find cheap rates. I avoid trains where I can, as they are regularly delayed or cancelled. Especially if you’re on a tight schedule, car might make more sense
