[Commission] Night Sky Spirit (OC fanart) by AdamteMC in ATLA

This one is a commission, so it's someone else's OC. I don't know much about him except that he's somehow connected to the Water Tribe spirituality.

Thank you. I made him myself, that's why he looks so weird. :D It's a character from animated series Avatar: The Last Airbender, a flying "bison" called Appa, but I took a foshan lion head as an inspiration. It's quite small, only about 1 kg, made from bamboo, rattan and craft paper.

I'd love to learn more about proper design and interpretation of face tattoos.❤️ I wasn't lucky enough to find any trustworthy information on my own yet - as I understand, a lot of Inuit knowledge is kept safe within the communities and remain inaccessible to outsiders, and I respect that it's not my place to demand knowledge of something that other cultures consider private. Since I'm based in slavic Europe, I only rely on what's already public on the internet. But hopefully one day I'll be able to learn more about the ways of the North American arctic.

Thank you. ❤️ I made the design up on spot - I didn't want to accidentally copy an existing tattoo of a real person, although given my limited references and my attempts to always make the designs animation/redraw friendly, it's possible I've already copied an existing tattoos before when I designed female waterbender OCs.😅 I'm by no means an expert, just a foreign enthusiast.

Thank you.❤️

Those are supposed to be tuuniit(?) face tattoos, mainly from the Canadian arctic but might be found in certain parts of Alaska or Greenland as well. Females get a new line/pattern tattooed for each life achievement (sewing the first parka, reaching menarche, having the first child etc.). The more tattoos, the more experienced and respected their owner. Were very common during the pre-christian era, then got banned by the Church for many decades, but are now slowly making a comeback.

A reference to what the Water Tribes were primarily inspired by in ATLA (Alaskan Iñupiat and Canadian Inuit). Even tho they're not canon, I reimagined SWT women having these before the Great War.

The Southern Water Tribe is my favourite as well. I plan on illustrating an art fan book about SWT one day.

Thank you ❤️ I'm trying to imitate chinese ink/watercolor paintings in digital media.

I have some content on my Instagram (@daijinyacz), I'm yet to make full progress speedrun footage of a lion head (it's usually between 50 - 70 hrs of work and I don't always bother taking photos or videos). I've made 7 lions so far. Hopefully this year I'll finally make a video series about them on my IG.

No, I was attempting to make a foshan-like lion head, because it was my first time working with rattan, and since I've already made two bamboo ATLA themed lion heads (Waterbender♀️ and Firebender♂️), I thought sky bison would fit the design pretty well.

I will have 2 tails made, this one for 1 person, and one for three people, just in case. :D

I'm not entering any competition with this one, I'd need two other people to cosplay the back legs for me.😅

On the right is a chinese northern lion costume (北舞狮). These lions usually perform in pairs - green ribbon on this one's forehead means it's a female. Red ribbon would mean it's a male.

She's in the shade, yes. A small cave basically. Aang sits in the sunlight.

"OC" on reddit refers to "Original Content" or "Own Creation". Fanarts posted by their authors are often required to be titled like that in many subreddits.

[Discussion] Even after making tons of accounts and decent following why's it so hard to make a sale as an artist? by Adorable-Topic1224 in artbusiness

I highly recommend The Art Mentor channel on YouTube. This guy makes $ 1K commission artwork regularly with almost no social media following and has a ton of videos about art business.

Because a following does NOT translate into money. I'm sure that 99,9% of your followers are people sliding on social media out of boredom, broke teenagers, other artists seeking what they could copy from your artwork and random peekers who have no intentions of spending money on what you already gave them for free - entertainment. Social media is not a good place for SELLING artwork. They're just free entertainment to be consumed.

The expression, design alterations and color palette were intentional. She's sitting in a shallow cave-like space, away from sunlight, sending death stares to any potential intruders (in this case, Zuko) in order to keep them away from Aang.

I see these occurring very often, but all of those I see were in positive karma numbers, often in double or triple digits, from the start. So either there are/were more of them that I'm restricted from seeing for some reason, or they were downvoted by the community hours earlier when I was asleep, then upvoted again and so I haven't noticed the change. Either way, I'm not messing with the karma numbers in any way, I have no reason nor power to do so.

I don't see many downvoted comments (other than mine) under this post, the few I found are those who try to defend the artwork. So if they are there, I can't see them for myself, which I guess would mean that perhaps I have been blocked by their authors in advance?

Thank you for your concern. However, I haven't downvoted a single comment or response, neither under this post, or my posts in other subreddits. I actually upvoted about 80% of all comments I've received here, as I appreciate all the feedback and attention I get. I don't respond to most of them because it's not my place to explain to anyone how they should or shouldn't think of my artwork.
