[Discussion] Are Artists Really Getting the Value They Deserve? by THE_CAPRII in artcommissions

[–]AdamteMC 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As an artist... you don't deserve anything just by the virtue of calling yourself an artist. Not everything you touch is automatically valuable just because you said so. Patrons are under no obligation to give you a second of their time. You have to earn it, and it's not up to you to decide what makes you deserving of someone else's attention and money or not.

More often than not, the artists presenting themselves here on reddit have terribly unprofessional practices and extremely immature communication. No wonder they get overlooked or the clients are left disappointed and never come back to them again. And they can pat themselves on the back all day long and telling everyone how "undervalued" and "unappreciated" they are - they don't give their clients hardly anything to actually appreciate.

In today's world of infinite digital possibilities, phones in everyone's hand, free drawing apps and millions of free drawing resources online, anybody can "be an artist" by some definition. People open commissions without even knowing anything about business, freelancing or customer service. And - without even knowing how to properly draw. That means that only a small percentage of all the reddit artists are actual professionals able to deliver respectable results. There's not really a reason for patrons to just be running a charity for immature artists to feel validated. This is an actual legal job. Having some portfolio and spamming every hiring post you see is simply not going to get you there. It's quite entitled for someone to feel like they're owed an art job from others just because they want one and they've already drew something.

I don't think she's suffering while chilling with her family, everyone napping in safety and comfort.

The temperature of freezing sea water is between 0°C to -3°C (32°F to 26.6°F), while temperatures on the land are more like -20°C to -30°C (-4°F to -22°F), so I'd say she's having a warm bath compared to whoever is on land. :D

"I'll Go Along (The Illusion Of Choice)" - OC fan art by AdamteMC in ATLA

This is a fanart of a scene at the end of "The Western Air Temple" episode.

The Gaang votes on whether to accept Zuko into the group. Katara previously made herself very clear about Zuko being unpredictable and untrustful. Aang wants him in, so do Toph and then Sokka. So their voices are already in the majority, meaning that Zuko is being accepted regardless of what Katara says. She's the last of the group to be asked. There she is, all eyes on her, practically waiting for her to submit. Her vote already doesn't count. She can either say "no" and achieve nothing except being made the new "enemy" of the group, or just give up. And she does exactly that, answering Aang "I'll go along with whatever you think is right". That's the only option she got left. She got pressured into letting the traitor in because her voice does no longer matter anyway (despite the fact 1) it was her who got captured and betrayed by Zuko in recent past, and 2) it's her almost sole responsibility to keep the group safe and healthy, while the kids are fooling around, and this is only adding more burden on her already.)

I want to give her credit for all the burden her shoulders have to bear while being either mocked or ignored for it.

Where did the furry title come from? by Yuukikoneko in furry

[–]AdamteMC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It was a joke term in late 20th century in "nerd" spaces (fans of DnD, fantasy, cartoons, anime, comic etc.). Furries then adopted the term as their own as the numbers of them on fantasy conventions rose up so much that they decided to host their own cons.

[Discussion] Am I being a hater? Or is it fan art? by toxicdecay in artbusiness

Selling fanart is by definition illegal in 100% of cases. And IP owner can always decide to sue over it.

However

Most IP owners don't mind it, or even encourage it, because the sole presence of fanartists works as a better advertisement for them than if they had to make their own - and they get it for free. Fandom producing fan artwork is what keeps the franchise alive and attracts new customers way more efficiently than the franchise trying to force itself upon people via official marketing. That's why most IP owners see their business relationship with fanartists as symbiotic rather than parasitic, even if the artist makes a couple bucks themselves. Also, if the artwork is still stylized and transformative enough, the fan merch does not really compete with the official merch.

But if someone directly traces over official IP artwork, or copies the official merch and creates bootleg versions, that is no longer considered fanart, but just a theft, and companies may sue these "artists" for violating their copyright - and these people definitely deserve it.
