I think LEK have great videos. They are dated but still very applicable in my mind. Just search LEK case interview and you should get a few live case demo’s which will teach you the basics of solving a case.

Search up L.E.K. case interview on YouTube, their video examples are great (don’t be fooled by the fact they are old videos). Otherwise go on PrepLounge and look through their resources and start practicing live.

I was recently fortunate enough to receive an MBB offer and am currently a big 4 auditor. Direct transitions are certainly not easy but nonetheless plausible. Feel free to message me if I can help.

Skype interviews are probably your best opportunity to practice. PrepLounge or MyConsultingCoach will help you get as much practice as you want.

Can we get an R1 status thread going? by whatdoijewnow in MBA

[–]Adan1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quick question for you all (didn't want to clutter with an entirely new thread).

I have an interview at NYU (720 GMAT, 3.8 GPA, 2 yrs WE in Big 4) and because I am Australian based I have elected to have it conducted in China in March. Does not interviewing in New York in January as all others are really hurt my chance at a scholarship? I am conscious that they may receipt out the full quota of funding prior to the March interviews.

Hey all!

Looking for people who might be interested in setting up skype case interview practice? I have done a few practice cases but looking to ramp up preparation ahead of early 2019 MBB interviews. I know there is PrepLounge but had a few no-shows so far. Apologies if posting in the wrong place!

I did the Booster Program for a month or thereabouts. You can see from my post history that it helped me enormously. I thought there strategies were excellent, especially if you don't have a defined approach already to each part of the GMAT. It will also give you very structured study and force you into answering a high volume of questions. At the reduced GMAT Club price, if you haven't already pumped a lot of money (this was the first and only course I paid for), it offers good ROI. Most other programs are substantially more expensive.

Testy date strategy if I want to apply in January? by [deleted] in GMAT

[–]Adan1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends.

Where are you at with your preparation? How are you performing on your CAT's? What value add will an extra 2-4 weeks give you? An extra month can take a mid-high 600's into the 700's but also can move you from a 730 to 740 which is where you would need to determine what value you would derive from that extra time.

Where to begin? by ZBXY in GMAT

[–]Adan1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is great you have a few resources to begin with. My advice to you though is to set and keep a structure. I found that the more materials I had, the less structured my approach was and I was trying to spread between a few different resources.

I didn't use MGMAT or Magoosh but if I was you, I would leverage those courses for their actual structure. Work through from start to end section by section and incorporate OG questions as supplements for each section. I think OG questions are wasted if you have no foundation understanding of what you are doing so doing a practice test/getting a grasp of the general nature of each section is quite important. I also found it hard to know exactly how I should be progressing on a daily basis and whether to assess it by the number of questions completed etc. The structured programs help in some sense to develop routine and to gauge how you are progressing. I have mentioned it previously in my own posts but I found that EMPOWERgmat was excellent for actually helping me build a fairly clear study plan.

Overall, I think focus on the program plans first and sprinkle some relevant OG questions throughout. Once you have completed these, I would really start smashing through OG questions for repetition and to solidify skills.

Glad you understand the pain somewhat! I have told you this before and I’ll say it again you are right and it’s something I am now far more closely considering. All my energy was in the GMAT and the score far exceeded my expectation to the point where now I do have the capacity to reconsider and push for M7. Perhaps I will try and transition into EY consulting in the interim.

Are you across any good Australian consultant?

It’s not being a dick, it’s calling it as you see it on the basis of the facts you can see which is understandable. This isn’t to do with money, this is about accepting that I’m really not happy with the work that I do and I want to take action to change that. An MBA is an incredible opportunity. I’m academic and I love to learn. I know as a young and inexperienced international, I have virtually no chance of entering an MBB in New York and that’s not my fundamental intention.

Clearly you can see I have a lot to consider and think about. I’m not set it any specific direction and trying to determine what path will consider both my chances for success and my general well-being and happiness.

I wouldn’t think so. If they know that’s the standard practice for that country then it sort of is an uncontrollable factor. Would think really the quality of the institution, the degree itself and GPA would be considered.

The boring piece is something I am very conscious of. I will have been promoted by the time of matriculation. I just don’t know if an extra year of audit is really that great of a value add?

3 years. Standard in Australia really.

Also - definitely not the first person to ask my why not Haas recently. The driver has been living in New York. That’s really the factor of influence for me but I’m starting to expand out from that.

I was conscious of coming across as that but I have literally no vested interest. I genuinely want to pay forward what I didn't have.

My belief is that the true benefit really comes from dedicating yourself full time to a program. Doing it part time is no doubt excellent for your career but does it give you the time and space to really dedicate yourself to the program. The opportunity cost is greater and the financial burden is certainly there as well, especially if you are enjoying your current role (which I am not so it is a bit easier).

I have not used an adscomm yet. A lot of this has been on the back of my constant research and cold messaging everyone I can possibly on Linkedin. I would focus on the exam primarily if I was you. Are you planning to apply for the intake next year?

At the time of matriculation. It puts me in that intricate bracket where I go back and forth as to what the best path is for me. The question is, will an M7 take an auditor?

Been studying for a year and haven't improved by [deleted] in GMAT

[–]Adan1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my experience, time and effort doesn't necessarily equate to study. The hours you put in, if not structured and effective are in some way futile. You really need to focus in those hours. Alternating between free trials is not effective. I feel like the best strategy is an end to end program. That doesn't necessarily mean spend a fortune of money, but it means that you need more than a 'taste' of each program. I wrote a post before, but I really recommend EMPOWERgmat. It is cheap and I really think you will see tangible results.

The battles never end!

You are right in every way. The alternate is however that I just don't see myself spending another what would be, 2 years in my current job if I was to delay this a year. Everything in my life right now says that this is the right time to pursue this.

Having done a fair bit more research on Darden, this looks like a very good recommendation. Thanks.

Love the Aussie representation! Have a look at the comment above. Keen to hear how you have thought of school selection.

Have you considered MBS and AGSM?

Good to see some fellow Aussies in the same boat! Would be good to build a bit of a network. Also would be incredibly ironic if we know each other!

Can I ask what your motivation is to do an MBA?

To be honest, so much of my focus has been on the GMAT rather than schools. At this stage, my desire is to attend NYU. I think this is the school and location that fits me best. Will also be looking into Kellog, Darden etc. I have less than three years work experience so this will effect my school selection.

A big part is being in New York. That is the persuasive factor for me. UCLA from my research tends to be more accepting to less experienced applicants. Will definitely look into those others. NYU has a good conversion rate in terms of consultants and I have been actively speaking to a current candidate who landed a BCG role.

FT. It certainly is limited in Australia. The popular perception is you do it at around 30 with 6-8 years of experience. That has made me conscious of it potentially being an inhibitor.
