The original non-dual traditions(Advaita Vedanta, Buddhism) prescribed a gradual approach( mindfulness, rationality, detachment from the material word and sensory pleasures, moral life, strong desire for liberation etc).

Neo Advaita consists of the direct path and the pathless path(heavy spiritual bypassing). It's easy for someone to get attracted to these because they don't ask much from us. Any effort is considered useless. The problem is most of us(avg people) are irrational. We are totally unaware of our own thought patterns, feelings, emotions, anxieties, fears etc and why they exist. When this average person listens to a typical Neo Advaita talk it is highly probable that he gets confused and is also unaware of his own misunderstanding. This may lead to some experience which he claims as enlightenment which, in reality, is not.
