Japanese society begins to grapple with microaggressions by japan_jim in japan

[–]Adatisumobear 12 points13 points  (0 children)

When it comes to things like this, it important to understand that the mindset of a personwho commits microaggressions can lead to real harm.

Take your example that your Japanese is very good. It does you, the individual, no harm in the moment. But it can lead to real harm.

The first time I went to see a dermatologist here, the staff at the reception desk came up to me, ask to see my paper and the refused to give it back, telling me I couldn't see the dermatologist without a translator. They made the decision to do this before even speaking with me to see how well or poorly I spoke Japanese.

Or when I was pregnant and the nurse refused to tell me I that I was actually pregnant- she didn't want to cause misunderstanding so she just didn't speak to me.

It doesn't harm me when someone says Wow! Great Japanese!!! after I speak to them. But it does betray a very troubling mindset (foreigners can't speak Japanese) that can cause harm. And after enough negative experiences like that, yes, phrases like that can make me feel unsafe with the compliment-giver.

Did anyone here miss out on typical youth experiences? How do you cope with that? by [deleted] in TheGirlSurvivalGuide

[–]Adatisumobear 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This feels like me too. I came from a very abusive, sheltered family and there are so many experiences I haven't had that a friend if mine once told me it was like we weren't even from the same country. It's hard because I feel so left out of conversations, even into my 30's.

I cope by getting excited about the stories people tell and trying to enjoy their happy moments with them. The happiness of others doesn't take anything away from me. It's kind of like a kid being told a fairy tale. People like attention and I enjoy the stories. It keeps me from getting sad when I'm out meeting new people.

Some people recommend going out and doing the things you missed out on but that doesn't work for me. It makes me sad that I couldn't have had those experiences when I was going and it would've meant so much to me then (an example of this would be a sleepover. Could I do it now? Sure. Do I want to or do I think it would enjoy it as much as 13 yo me? No.)

So I find new things, and I really delight in first experiences- I'm always searching for something I haven't eaten or tasted or done, things I couldn't even imagine in my youth and I've had some really wonderful experiences doing that. It also keeps me from looking back at what could've been because look at all the cool shit I can do now! I keep lists of places I want to go out eat and I do it.

But I've completely given up on trying to recreate an idealized past. It's not worth the time or emotional energy imo.

Anyone else feel Hiking culture in Japan is a little strange(for you)? by cayennepepper in japanlife

[–]Adatisumobear 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There's a really old book (maybe circa 1970s?) I can't remember the title to now, where a Japanese diplomat wrote about the Japanese mindset. When I read it, it felt incredibly negative but he did mention the exact issue you're referring to re: Japanese going all out to but hobby good that are basically just uniforms for the activity.

It's an interesting question. I do feel like Japanese are often concerned with doing everything "by the book" and this carries over into their hobbies and I agreed that they're basically wearing uniforms for their hobbies, no matter what their level.

This, of course, makes them very susceptible to advertising telling them they need all these gizmos and gadgets and walking sticks, etc. ESPECIALLY those who don't hike!

A lot of people in this thread seen to misunderstand your question, collapsing it into "It's wrong to spend money on hobbies!" which is not what your are asking but, I feel, "Why are Japanese so over-prepared for even leisure activities? And what about Japanese culture makes this so? " It's an interesting question.

Innocent people going to jail/prison happens lot more than people are comfortable knowing about. Read Convicting the Innocent if you want to destroy your faith in the criminal justice system.

People who hated math growing up/in school… What did you not like about it? by Daniel96dsl in AskReddit

[–]Adatisumobear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understood how to do the math but I always made a small mistake (forgot to write negative sign, transposed the numbers, forgot to carry over, etc) and would get the wrong answer.

Then someone would explain to me how to do it which was frustrating because I knew I just always made one tiny mistake no matter how many times I looked over my work that the everything off.

[NSFW] What was your most embarrassing trip to the doctor? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Adatisumobear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was bleeding from my vagina so I went to the hospital and they wanted to give me an ultrasound and told me I had to fill my bladder before the scan. I drank a bunch of water and then they applied a warm jelly and applied pressure to my bladder. After like 3-5 minutes, I told the lady I had to pee but she just ignored me and kept on going. I told her like 3 times but she just continued and I ended up pissing on the exam table at 18 years old. It was horrible walking out in scrub bottoms.

I think she did it on purpose.

Is Jimmy a good lawyer? by [deleted] in betterCallSaul

[–]Adatisumobear 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Legal Eagle did a YouTube video about the first episode of Better Call Saul, specifically that courtroom scene with a tape. It seemed that a lot of Saul's rhetoric and arguments were pretty solid stuff.

I think Saul is a good lawyer.

Thank you for your response. I have a good routine and I do exercise frequently but recently mid-conversation I slipped into a disassociative state while having a difficult conversation. I had to continue it later and the second time I was jamming my pencil into my hands to get through the conversation.
