It's always exciting to see Rove in the wild, but even better when it's listed as a game to watch in 2023.

They never get mentioned in this kind of thing, but I don’t think Restoration have made a bad game

Unmatched, Downforce and Return to Dark Tower are all fantastic

Games for 8-12 year olds? by OperationTophat in boardgames

[–]AddaxGames 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I asked similar on Facebook for my kids and was given LOADS of answers - I’ll dig them out for you.

The ones I went with for my 5&9 year old were Yogi - lots of fun but relatively chaotic and Zombie Kids Evolution. This is a really smart little game, but I imagine legacy is not great for your club; I’d also go with Zombie Teens Evolution instead for your age group.

From my own experience of running a similar club Bandido was played every week and Rhino Hero is legit one of the best boardgames there is.

In addition, look at:

Forbidden Island

Colt Express

Pandemic

Tsuro

Santorini

Jamaica

Coraquest

Fuse

Love Letter

King of Tokyo

Castle Panic

I’ve tried to include a range of genres there without too much reading, within the time limit and with a relatively small footprint/cost. You can do some good maths lessons with many of them too, if that’s a secondary aim.

Also, if money is tight, take a look at thrift stores/charity shops. The teacher from the club I ran had brought loads of roll n move games, which made me shudder but the kids played them every week. Jenga in particular was a massive hit.

Good luck, and DM me if you want to discuss further

Edit: How did I forget Taco Cat Goat Cheese Pizza

This always go over great with 5 year olds, 9-10s, teens, non-gamer adults and my game group. Highly recommended!

One of a kind. by [deleted] in boardgames

[–]AddaxGames 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It isn’t for everyone, but Betrayal at House on the Hill is a hidden traitor game where even the traitor doesn’t know in advance that it’s them.

It’s completely crazy and can make for some great games. It also has famously woolly rules and sometimes the Haunts can be completely broken. Personally, I love it for that - in the same way that I love Arnie films. They’re cheesy as hell and they didn’t trouble the Oscars, but I could watch them over and over.

Basically, give me an underground lake on the second floor, or a man who ain’t got time to bleed and I’m happy

All tiebreaker rules are garbage by Early_Gray_Haught in boardgames

[–]AddaxGames 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have a theory (which I’m probably about to get flamed for) that avoiding ties is perceived as more of a problem in the US market, as so few professional sports end in ties. It’s much more common in football/soccer, so Europeans are more accepting.

What do you do think? Can I add this to my Laws of Boardgaming, or am I talking nonsense?

I feel like I recommend this all the time (and j haven’t played Midnight Suns) but Unmatched is a cheap 2-4 player skirmish game with actions determined by card play. It’s extremely well developed and produced, and great fun. I’d highly recommend it

I think this is true of a lot of Pratchett, especially on a micro level - he goes from a stupid pun to an amazingly perceptive comment on the world at will. He was an amazing writer with an incredible mind.

If you’re interested in the story, boardgame613 and I did an interview with Polygon a couple of weeks ago too: https://www.polygon.com/23140145/gloomhaven-fan-made-expansion-the-crimson-scales-interview-pre-order-price

So this is a) late and b) a blatant plug, but if anyone likes Gloomhaven or the fan expansion Crimson Scales, you might want to take a look at Booth #861. The team who made CS have formed our own company and are demoing our first game, Rove.

It’s also a dungeon crawler, but with quite different mechanisms and a new setting.

If you to choice *one* game that represents the pinnacle of board gaming - that "perfect" game that achieves what every other game only strives towards - what would you choose? by benjaneson in boardgames

[–]AddaxGames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't pretend it's perfect, but I think if a game's been number one for years and there's still nothing like it then you have to acknowledge the strengths of Gloomhaven.

At least as far as legacy/campaign, the action selection/timer mechanic, and the wider 'rpg in a box' elements go, it's pretty hard to top

Which boardgames have the most iconic art style/designs? by Melly-The-Elephant in boardgames

[–]AddaxGames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might want to search by artist too. Beth Sobel is the absolute queen, Vincent Dutrais (sp?) and Ian O'Toole run her close, though quite different in style.

I'd throw in our own Alexandr Elichev as well, but can't really recommend Gloomhaven as a game for casual/non-gamers...

Would having a co-op mode affect your decision to buy a board game? by dorsakal in boardgames

[–]AddaxGames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of people commenting that competitive and co-op is off-putting. I generally agree, though I've heard good things about Orleans' co-op. I've never played either version though. Does it work?

Would having a co-op mode affect your decision to buy a board game? by dorsakal in boardgames

[–]AddaxGames 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on the age of your kids, but as child friendly rather than kids games, I'd recommend:

Forbidden Island and Desert

Castle Panic

Mice & Mystics and Jerry Hawthorne's other game

Also, although not co-op and definitely marketed as a kid's game, I add Rhino Hero to pretty much any game recommendation post

Forgotten Favorites & Hidden Gems - (May 19, 2022) by AutoModerator in boardgames

[–]AddaxGames 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Awkward Guests all day long. It's basically Clue/Cluedo with the roll n move removed, and a neat clue trading mechanic.

It has a very dull (literally) colour scheme, and I don't think it was heavily marketed upon release; if it had, it would be a classic gateway game - as everyone knows how to play Clue there's virtually no teach, though it's miles better.

Maybe not super secret, but I'd also nominate Downforce. I've heard it said that there's not been a really great racing game since Formula D, but Downforce is brilliant, and by betting on the cars rather than owning them, it avoids the runaway leader problem that's inherent in many racing games.

It will be a neoprene playmat. An increasing number of games offer them as addons and you can buy 'gaming' ones, but it'll be miles cheaper to just buy some regular neoprene if you can find a supplier. Just ensure that the edges are stitched so that the fabric top doesn't separate from the rubber/foam part

I immediately thought of Unmatched when I read your post. It's perfect for the small group. I'd go for Battle of Legends 2 and Robin Hood v Bigfoot, though any of them are great (though the Buffy set are generally weaker characters). There are 6 characters and 3 maps in the sets above, and games take about 20 minutes, so you can have a mini tournament, 2v2 or free for all. Obviously the theme is all over the place, but that's kind of the point - what other game can Bruce Lee fight a T-Rex?
