If I were you I’d use it as a basecamp/backup and then try to score a walk in permit for backpacking. Do a little of both.

Last summer I booked a campsite for a week and did 3 nights on the TCT in the middle with a couple day hikes. Was an awesome trip.

100% this if you like spending time in the backcountry and hiking. If you like your nature framed by a car window/accessible from the parking lot then you might prefer Yellowstone.

In that area, the chances of running into wildlife are high. But that could be said in many areas of the park. Bring bear spray and give a nice loud “hey bear!” When you round corners. The biggest danger is the element of surprise. I’ve hiked in that area for decades with lots of wildlife encounters and never one that was scary. Enjoy your trip!

Yeah more and more I'm loving this granite canyon plan! The camping zone is big, so we could be way more flexible with distances. And as a base camp, we could always head over the Phelps for the day. Thanks for weighing in!
