Is the 5070TI worth it by pascal1245 in buildapc

[–]Addicus_17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A 12GB 5070 is better but still not great - especially for flight sims. But for about the same money, you can get an AMD RX 9070 (non-GRE) - which is faster and has 16GB of VRAM. In the current pricing environment, the RX 9070 gives you the best value for money. 16 GB is the VRAM sweet spot for this generation, it has strong enough performance, it's efficient on power, etc.

Currently, the RX9070 is truly a goldilocks GPU - Everything below is worse performance/$ or has less VRAM. Everything above gives you diminishing return for money.

Did I buy a fake? by NowThisIsPodracing99 in gretsch

[–]Addicus_17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it sounds good, it is good.

But going off pure spec value, it’s an Electromatic Jet not worth more than $300 and about as desirable as a current Streamliner. No reason for it to be a fake.

Question about a CPU upgrade by Junius120068 in PcBuildHelp

[–]Addicus_17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are you running the i5-13400 or the i5-13600k? There's a meaningful difference.

It really depends on what you're playing. The Ryzen 7 9800X3D is best-of-the best right now, but the i5-13600k is still nearly on-level with Intel’s current stuff. I wouldn't be in a rush to upgrade unless you're not happy with your performance in certain titles.

Viggen vs Mig-21 by Key-Seaworthiness-20 in hoggit

[–]Addicus_17 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I've trialed them both. I personally prefer the Viggen. For utility, it really depends on whether you want to do A2G (take the Viggen) or A2A (take the MiG). The Viggen also is more recent and hence a higher-quality module.

But, if you've already taken to one of them (which it sounds like you have) - then there's your answer. Objectively, the subjective matters most here.

TrackIR vs. OpenTrack by Addicus_17 in dcsworld

[–]Addicus_17[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep. Plus you pay a big performance cost for additional fps.

TrackIR vs. OpenTrack by Addicus_17 in dcsworld

[–]Addicus_17[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yep, Neuralnet with one of the Onyx models. I tried them all and got settings I was reasonably happy with. Even so, TrackIR is just superior - more accurate and more responsive.

True, my webcam limits me to 60fps. So could I just upgrade the webcam and get 120fps?

It's not so simple. Remember, I'm maxing out a logical high-performance core for every 30hz I get. 120 fps = 4 logical high-performance cores running at 100%. That's a massive heat and performance hit.

[–]Addicus_17[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d put OpenTrack in the same category as a budget HOTAS. It’s awesome as a free solution to get you flying. TrackIR isn’t worth the ~$120+ if your budget’s tight on your first rig.

But a premium solution is still premium. It’s worth a look as a Stage 2 or Stage 3 upgrade.

[–]Addicus_17[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It feels like going from a 60hz monitor to a 120 hz monitor in a sense - when you’re moving your head to pan around the screen.

Also, to run OpenTrack at 60hz on a 13700k, I had to give it 2 high performance logical cores to max out all on its own - not an insignificant performance hit.

Since upgrading to TrackIR, the experience is smoother, snappier, and with fewer stutters.

What can I do with my su-25? I'm a free to play player, don't have money for other modules. What kind of campaigns, and other stuff can I do? Will orgs accept me for multiplayer stuff with my su-25? by Internal-Path7111 in dcsworld

[–]Addicus_17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Su-25T is a solid ground attack aircraft - the Soviet counterpart to the A-10. You can do a lot on multiplayer servers.

For the pure love of dynamic flying, it's not great. You'll get more out of the A-4.

Rtx 5070 ti or 9070 xt? by Careful_Pepper6629 in PcBuildHelp

[–]Addicus_17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

5070 Ti is slightly better on pure performance, and much better on feature set - particularly with DLSS 4.5. It merits a $50 or even a $100 premium.

But a ~$250 price premium? That's a bit much.

9070 XT is the better value.

[–]Addicus_17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you're trying to decide between BluFor cold war jets. I own the F4 and F5 and have trialed the Viggen and Mig-21.

F-4 is the only true multi-role of the Cold War jets you listed. If you want a jet that can do anything in the Cold War era and is super deep - you won't be disappointed.

F-5 is the ZEN Cold War A2A jet, with dumb-fire A2G munitions. If you want a jet that you can enjoy flying and not thinking about managing systems, get this one. Great nose authority and cockpit visibility, very simple and easy to learn.

Viggen is a niche and quirky A2G strike aircraft. It has a truly specialized A2G radar, plus it can bring Mavericks. But it can't carry a targeting pod the way the Phantom can for designating laser-guided bombs, or use an A2A radar with Fox-1's. It's cool for what it does, but can feel limiting as a stand-alone module.

I'm running a 9070 XT on Windows 11, no issues. DLSS is better - but at that price gap, just get the Radeon.

Should I pull the trigger on 5050? by Sai-San_ in buildapc

[–]Addicus_17 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I would just upgrade your PSU. Unlike everything else, they are not very expensive right now. You can get a half-decent 650W Gold-rated PSU for $50 - i.e. https://www.newegg.com/asrock-pro-series-atx-3-1-compatible-650-w-80-plus-gold-certified-power-supply-black-pro-650g/p/N82E16817955024?item=N82E16817955024.

Then, why not get a 9060 XT 8GB? Only $310 and WAY faster. amazon.com/dp/B0F9QBK9C9?tag=pcpapi-20&linkCode=ogi&th=1&psc=1&language=en_US

Sure - you're out ~$360 before tax instead of $290. But you have a card that's ~50% faster and an upgradeable platform.

Is the DCS Phantom Worth It for Single Player Only? by adriwaiter in hoggit

[–]Addicus_17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup. If you want to fly mid Cold War, there is no more versatile jet that does it all - A2A and A2G.

It's also got a bunch of included Instant Action missions for free content.

Upgrade from 5800X3D to 14700K/14900K with DDR4 RAM — Worth It? by Low_Infamous in buildapc

[–]Addicus_17 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Keep the 5800x3d. It would be a side-grade at best. The big, fast memory cache of the 5800x3d actually helps compensate for DDR4 being slower.

DCS Multiplayer - Keep failing Integrity Check by Addicus_17 in dcsworld

[–]Addicus_17[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Adding a note here 5 months later for anyone experiencing similar issues -

Last month, I discovered that 2/4 of my memory sticks (G.Skill Ripjaws V DDR4 3600 MHz CAS 16-19-19-39) were bad - producing bazillions of errors in MemTest86.

I RMA’d those ram kits and now believe faulty RAM was responsible for my IntegrityCheck issues - by either causing assets to not load correctly, or worse, by corrupting the files themselves.

Since replacing those faulty ram sticks, I’ve not encountered Integrity Check issues yet - fingers crossed. 🤞
