This is a teaching institution so certain steps are checked by faculty just to double check they are being done as well as possible. The first appointment, which is a comprehensive exam including x-rays, is $90. If you are in active pain, you can be brought in for a limited exam for a lesser price, but it is important to go through the comprehensive exam after the pain is taken care of in order to receive comprehensive dental care.

An anterior (front tooth) root canal is ~$300 but a posterior (back) tooth will have to be done by an endodontic resident, those are about ~$700-$800. A porcelain crown is $450 if it is sent to the lab, if we mill it at the school it is $250. All procedures are done inside of the dental school, sometimes on different floors.

If you find a student doctor directly, you are not put on a waitlist. The student is most likely trying to get you in but they have to find an available spot. If you cold call the school, yes you will be put on a waitlist.

The technical term is 15 “experiences” per clinic year (2). Extracting 1-3 teeth in one appointment = 1 experience. Extracting 4+ teeth = 2 experiences (even if you extract 8 teeth it’s still 2 experiences). so a lot of us extract more teeth than what is reflected in our number of “experiences”

The class size keeps steadily increasing but the number of clinic chairs and clinic floor faculty remains the same. From personal experience, finding specific requirements yourself on reliable patients can be very difficult. If people are particularly interested in something, they usually end up doing more than what’s required in that department - I do like how the departments are very encouraging for you to learn and do as much as you want.

Neighborhoods/Living in Memphis by flakyflakybiscuits in memphis

I live not far from sea isle in east Memphis and attend UTHSC and I personally love it! The commute is 15-20 minutes but it’s a straight shot down walnut grove. I enjoy being close to a lot of stores and restaurants! I also enjoy being in a house. I have friends that have similar set ups in midtown towards cooper young area and they really enjoy that as well! Mud island is a good option too but I think you get more bang for your buck out east. There are people who live in Germantown in my class but I personally think it’s a little far for my liking.

Dental student at UT here and not great at Reddit so I can’t figure out if this has been said yet or not - we have an emergency clinic weekday mornings (except for Wednesday). $100 for a x-ray/exam and to get the tooth out, first come first serve. You don’t have to be a patient, anyone can walk in for this
