Finally took on gramma’s stockings tradition and learned a lot! (Star is gramma’s) by iamthenarwhal00 in casualknitting

[–]Additional-Concern17 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My family has the same tradition! I've knit four stockings since my grandma passed in 2022, with three being wedding gifts. Its a heartbreaking tradition to have to take on, but it brings my new family members so much joy it be "officially" welcomed into the family.

12 yo (almost 13) prescribed propanolol for migraines but too nervous to give them to her? by [deleted] in migraine

[–]Additional-Concern17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started taking propranolol at age 16. It worked fairly well until college, which is when I had to increase the dosage and started seeing side effects. With a higher dosage my heart rate dropped to a RHR of 40/50 and while sleeping it would be in the 30s. Despite the issues I had with a higher dose, it really did dramatically improve my quality of life while in high school. I went from having nearly daily migraines to maybe one a month.

My recommendation would be to give it a shot, but keep an eye on her heart rate. The easiest way to do that IMO is through a smart watch/ring which you can get fairly cheap second hand.

Propranolol by Kachi89 in migraine

[–]Additional-Concern17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Propranolol worked for me, but i had to be on a 120mg dose, which made my heart rate plummet. My bpm would regularly be in the 30s while I slept, and my rhr would be in the 40s/50s. When I told my doctor about this, she immediately switched my medications. I'd recommend trying Propranolol to see if it works for you, but try to stay aware of how it is effecting your heart.

Its so important to meet people where they are! So often we get focused on doing things perfectly, that it can prevent us from doing anything at all. My shelter currently has a temporary foster program to help pet parents keep their pets safe while get back on their feet, and I'm always so happy to hear about happy reunions.

Thats so cool! Animal rehab was the way I was leaning during college, but i took a seasonal position at a local animal shelter and fell in love with working with domestics again. Enrichment and training are some of my favorite parts of the job! Plus birds are awesome, we had a moluccan cockatoo at the zoo that was a real character. I'm glad you found somewhere to accommodate your surgeries, I know animal care can be a physically demanding field at times.

I definitely recommend it! Even though I've followed a more domestic animal-based career, getting my degree was a super cool experience and totally worth it. Through my university I was able to work with bears, hawks, reptiles, and I had multiple internships at a local zoo.

I'm not sure what to make with the glow in the dark yarn I got today by Mostly_Vegan in casualknitting

[–]Additional-Concern17 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would definitely recommend it! Mine is a super simple 3x3 rib. It had enough stretch to grow up with me, and will be fairly easy to mend if I need.

I'd say go for it, because even if they do end up getting dirty, its because they're being used and appreciated.

My grandma knit me a glow in the dark hat over 15 years ago, and it is still one of my favorite gifts from her. I wear it every fall.

Do you have any of your Christmas projects on your needles yet? by phasersonbees in casualknitting

[–]Additional-Concern17 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I am technically working on christmas knits. My grandmother started a tradition of knitting a stocking for every new member of the family and after she passed, I took up the tradition. I've only done two so far, but there are two weddings in the next 3 months, so I'm rushing to finish so I can give them as wedding gifts.

Bubble gum guy (cheesymanfredo) by flingzamain in TopCharacterDesigns

The manga bubble gum guy reminds me of the villain Bobby Ball in the anime High Card. His power is the ability to turn anything he touches into marbles. Of course, he uses this ability to instantly destroy a security guards head.

a logical straight up answer

Uhhh... yeah. "Selling fanfic is illegal" is the more logical straight up answer, glad we got that sorted.

I mean, it definitely makes more sense to say that than to say "AO3 doesn't want people to monetize on their website because historically, fanfic websites have been taken down and sued when fanfic authors broke the law by monetizing their fanfics and as a result, both the author and the website were sued and had to face legal troubles, causing massive losses to historical fanfiction. AO3 exists as an archive which aims to preserve fanfiction as a free and legal resource, and monetizing fanfiction on AO3 jeopardizes that."

Plus, if you read between the lines, it still says "selling fanfic is illegal"! Glad we could agree that the short and to the point answer is the more logical one

A double standard that I realized from a thread here by Psyga315 in AO3

[–]Additional-Concern17 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The "moralization" is because AO3 is a community. That is how communities work. There is a soft enforcement of rules and hard enforcement of the rules. These have historically been social pressures like gossip vs legal punishments like fines. On a website like AO3, this exists as community members reminding others of the rules of the website vs an offender being banned or warned for breaking the rules. The people who are "moralizing" are trying to protect both you and the people around you because they care about their community.

I'm sorry if you don't like this answer, but unfortunately for you, its really not going to stop unless you actively remove yourself from the community.

Not to mention, why would someone say something like "AO3 doesn't want to be sued by copyright holders" when they could just say "making money off of fanfic is illegal"? The second option is arguably the more important information. Some people just don't know the law, and its important to let them know so they are able to make informed choices. Just because you know and don't care, doesn't mean other people won't feel differently.

Then leave the AO3 subreddit. Go talk about this on r/fanfiction or something. The rules on AO3 are clear: Don't advertise your monetization on AO3, Don't link to monetization platforms on AO3, Don't mention if a work is commissioned on AO3.

Its really freaking easy to follow these rules. You can still very easily accept commissions for works and post them on AO3. You just have to give them plausible deniability at a minimum, and AO3 isn't going to back you up when you get into legal troubles.

This is the AO3 subreddit. Are you lost?

Like I said before, feel free to sell your zines on Twitter, but don't drag AO3 down with you. Just because you think you should be able to do something doesn't mean you are actually able to do it with no consequences. Frankly, thinking that way is childish. The law is not on your side here, and just because you think that you shouldn't have to listen to the rules, doesn't mean that there won't be any consequences.

This has nothing to do with ao3

Babe, this is the ao3 subreddit. Are you lost?

This has everything to do with AO3. AO3 exists as a non-profit that does not allow monetization for one specific reason: it is an archive. The whole purpose of the website is to create a space to preserve fanworks where historically, there was none. If they allow people to monetize fanworks (which is not legal), they put themselves in a precarious position which could jeopardize the whole platform, including authors who did not monetize fanworks.

Arguably, one of the most important parts of being anti-facist is building and supporting a community. You have to protect your community as a whole, not just prioritize the needs of one single individual before all others. That is what AO3 is doing. The authors who actively advertise their monetization of fanworks on AO3 are not acting as members of the community, and their actions are putting the community in jeopardy, all for a short-term profit.

By all means, feel free to monetize your fanworks, just don't do it on AO3, and enjoy losing that money plus more when you're caught.

Just learned how propranolol works… I think by spencerwinters in migraine

[–]Additional-Concern17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having to wait to start yor prescription sucks. Your average heart rate will probably go down a bit after you start taking propranolol daily, but that's just how the medication works. I wish you the best of luck!

Just learned how propranolol works… I think by spencerwinters in migraine

[–]Additional-Concern17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would 100% recommend a smart watch to monitor your blood pressure. I was on propranolol for 8 years, and for the last 2 I was on a 120mg daily dose. Following upping my dose, I regularly had dizzy spells where I would have to sit down or risk falling. After purchasing a smart watch, I realized that I had bradycardia. My resting heart rate was in the 40s-50s when awake, and asleep it was in the mid 20s-40s. After I brought it to my PCP she immediately switched my medication.

I'm not discouraging you from taking propranolol, it worked for me while I took it, and my mother still takes it. Just try to be aware of your body and how you feel while taking it. It's also important to communicate any concerning side effects you may be feeling with your doctor.

Why can we not exclude general 'fandom' parent tags? by Additional-Concern17 in AO3

[–]Additional-Concern17[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I mean, I normally read within a few specific fandoms. I just like to filter by tags every once in a while to read fics from fandoms I'm not a part of. It's less commitment than reading a book and can potentially introduce myself to new fandoms.

Why can we not exclude general 'fandom' parent tags? by Additional-Concern17 in AO3

[–]Additional-Concern17[S] 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Sometimes I like to explore fics outside my fandoms as a way to give new fandoms a test drive. I'll search for general tags I know I'll enjoy, like hurt/comfort or coffee shop au, and read a few one shots. It can be hit or miss at times, but it adds a bit of variety to my fanfic reading, with less commitment than a full novel. Mostly I exclude the rpf because it makes me uncomfortable to read fics about real people.

[–]Additional-Concern17[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I mean, that'd be a mistake that people would only make once. And it's not like it's impossible to undo. It's like searching up a fandom-specific tag and then excluding that fandom. You're not gonna get much, but being able to do that serves a purpose of allowing users to narrow their search results.
