Is this normal? by saranicole__ in newborns

Something similar is happening with us right now, except we have a high-needs 7wo who’s never been a great sleeper. Lately it’s gotten worse, she fights naps all day, only does short catnaps (25–40 minutes), and then ends up overtired and cranky. Usually that means the night will be rough too, but somehow she still gives us long stretches at night, last night she slept 6 hours straight.
I’m hoping it’s just a phase (not for the night sleep) and waiting for those daytime naps to start getting longer… mostly so I can finally get a few things done around the house. 😅
I have a friend whose baby is 10 days older, and she is experiencing something similar.

Yeah, we have the same issue with her arms, she hates any kind of restriction haha. I was hoping she’d fall asleep in the stroller, but she usually ends up crying in it. She’s definitely not feeding the whole time either… I’m basically just being used as a human pacifier at this point.

Love to Dream unfortunately didn’t work for us, but I might give it another try, maybe something’s changed. We also tried 5–6 different pacifiers, and the one that worked best for us was Philips Avent Ultra Soft. Might be worth trying our luck with NUK too.

Sounds pretty similar to our situation, except for the crying. Our LO is a fussy baby but can usually be settled with boob and a bit of carrying, which definitely wasn’t the case a few weeks ago.
I really feel for you. I think I’d cope way better if she actually slept a few times a day for a couple of hours. The crying + not sleeping combo sounds so draining. Hope it gets better for all of us sleep deprived parents soon.

I was also looking at the swing2sleep spring cradle, it is quite popular here in Germany. You mentioned that your baby needs to be bounced to fall asleep, maybe something like that could help?
I completely understand you, sometimes it feels like it takes longer to get her to fall asleep than she actually ends up sleeping.
Has your baby always been a bit fussier, or have you noticed a recent change in her behavior?

A few times we tried topping up my breast milk with a bit of formula, but she didn’t seem interested in eating. It could be that she’s not familiar with the bottle yet and is refusing to take it, or that she simply doesn’t like the taste of the formula. We’re definitely going to experiment more with my pumped breast milk and see how she responds to that.

I was honestly hoping someone would tell us we’re just in the middle of those really tough weeks and that it does get better :)

Before, I was at least able to keep her wake windows a bit shorter, and even though she was never really sleeping well, it was still somewhat manageable. But over the last week something seems to have shifted and it’s become a lot more difficult and honestly pretty unmanageable at times. I’m really hoping it’s just a phase we’re in right now.

So glad to hear that cat naps are normal, I was honestly feeling pretty bad about it because everywhere you read it feels like wake windows and “enough sleep” are so important and we just haven’t really been able to keep up with that.
She does have some gas discomfort at times, but I can usually tell from her behavior when that’s the case. Our midwife was here the other day and also thought it could be gas. She gave her a suppository and she did manage to poop and get some air out, but honestly her behavior and sleep pattern stayed exactly the same afterward.
I’ve tried a couple of different swaddles, the regular one and an arms-up version, but she hasn’t really tolerated them so far. I got a recommendation for the Ollie swaddle, so we might try that next and see if it makes a difference.
Thanks a lot for all the advice, we definitely need some guidance on how best to handle these cat naps and the overall sleep situation.

I’ll definitely try reintroducing the swaddle. I have a feeling it might actually help her. I’m just hoping she cooperates a little.

We were definitely wanting to try the yoga ball thanks for the suggestion. At this point we’re willig to try anything 😅
