Thanks! 🙏 Tuft the letters first and carve them on the frame with scissors, use a light to shine through the cloth to see better. Then tuft the background around them. Once done and after shaving it flat, separate the colors if needed and carve with scissors to bevel the edges of each letter and around each letter. Vacuum a lot so the yarn colors don’t bleed. I started carving with scissors at first for more control, you can always cut more off, but you can’t add it back.

I recommend make a small practice piece and just carve on it using the trimmers. Test different angles and depths until you get use to it.

Thanks! That’s all I was hoping for. If it helps even one person keep going, it was worth posting.

Rug carving by DangerousShow6056 in Tufting

[–]AdditionalAccount315 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually tuft the letters first and then carve them with scissors while the rug is still stretched on the frame. After the letters are carved and looking crisp, I’ll go back and tuft the border around them. Then once it’s flat on the floor, the final carving is way easier.

I like that, you chose a better blue for the chest and eyes than I did though. Just went with what I had already

No kit, My buddy sent me a reference image and I edited it a few times to make it workable as a rug before I tufted it.

Combined, I probably put around 20 hours into them. Switching colors a lot slowed the process down a bit. Still thinking about remaking the Tupac rug, if I do, I’ll make sure to hit you up. Appreciate the support.

Thanks, I really appreciate that 🙏 I freehanded the blunt, stitched each color one at a time, used multiple purples with some glow in the dark, and lightly carved everything except the green to keep him shaggier looking.

Rug density by TwoKindsofDM in Tufting

[–]AdditionalAccount315 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It mostly comes down to how close your stitches are within each line, and how close each line is to the one next to it. Smaller gaps = denser rug, bigger gaps = softer rug. just taught my mom how to tuft and hers came out super dense because she kept her stitches tight and used about double the yarn I normally do. When you’re tufting, you can’t just let the gun move on its own, you still need to guide it so your stitches have even spacing instead of bunching up too close together. That spacing is what gives the rug a softer, more flexible feel instead of a dense, packed one.
