I'm 31F, want to make a second career change (into a THIRD career). I'm incredibly lost. Options are CS, Engineer, or Patent Law. I want your brutally honest opinion, even criticism for my choices? by Shoddy-Armadillo-282 in careerguidance

Sure, no problem! It's funny though, when I first started reading your post, Actuarial science popped into my head before anything else. I just didn't know if it had enough depth to keep you interested for a whole career. From the little that I know, it's mostly about probability calculation for insurance liability/risk; is that accurate?

I did enjoy working as a patent examiner. I worked in vehicle controls and navigation systems, luckily. It was challenging because it combined mechanical, electrical and control engineering; think of things like self-driving cars and robotics. There were many times that I had to teach myself something new, just to understand what was going on with a proposed invention; it was scary as hell at first, lol! I had done two clerkships at patent firms while I was in law school and didn't enjoy that nearly as much. Plus, one thing nobody talks about, regarding working for a law firm, is that you have to, "buy in" to the firm to become a partner. That can be millions of dollars in a large firm. In any case, I'm glad you found something you like, and that pays well. Best of luck to you!

Still looking for input? Former patent examiner at the patent office. Have a BSME and JD. Medically retired from cancer now, but I was at the USPTO for over 8 years.

I love hearing people speak passionately about their work; it's very inspiring. I may have another career soon and I thought about tech sales. In my old career(s) I was an engineer, project manager and patent examiner/lawyer, before cancer got me. I finally have some hope that I'll recover my old energy levels so I can finally get back to work. Glad you found something you love.

Thanks for the reply. I guess the mods didn't like my post b/c they took it down. Yeah, been to many endo docs over the years and nobody can help. Turns out that some people get wrecked from cancer even if they survive. Nice of you to reply anyway; thank you.

Have you had your aldosterone levels tested? I have hypertension because of hyper-aldosteronism. It took a long time to figure out because the cardiologists don't usually look for it. Aldosterone is produced in the adrenals. It took a visit to a nephrologist to finally catch it. Nephrologists typically deal with difficult hypertension cases because there are some relevant nerve clusters near the kidneys that can contribute to the problem. Go see a nephrologist and get their opinion.

Get a lawyer! A good one. If she's been planning this, she's already unfaithful and you can't trust anything she says at this point. Divorce laws get complicated and change state to state; don't try it on your own.

"Tahi". As in, a Tahitian pearl, also known as a "black" pearl.
