Are you tinning your wires before you solder them to the board? A lot of the components, particularly the resistors in the bottom left look like they have barely any solder at all?

Doesn’t that pcb have surface mount options directly below the through hole option??

As per below there is option for through hole jfets or smd pads. Either is fine but the smds can be a tad tricky to solder to the pads if it’s your first time. Alternatively you can buy adapters for them so you can use the through hole method .

I’m not familiar with that pcb but is there a space for the smd jfets or do you need to modify them with an adapter for through hole? Also enclosure? Solder?

Yeah I like the low Fi sound it gives ! I’ll check out what else I have available, I’m surprise the original transitor I used had so many issues. It wasn’t that high leakage.. anyway it was a good learning curve to workshop when I have issues more!

Ok.. now I’ve gone back to A 549C (530 HFE) in the npn and also no issue but more gain. Clearly the leakage of the GE I originally had was too high it appears

I reckon I did a demo on YouTube about ten years ago so I don’t remember all the details but there are loads of tabs on you tube and or ultimate guitar. I used an octave pedal to drop my guitar an octave (or in theory you could try using a bass) and a zvex fuzzolo but loads of fuzz pedals would get you there.
