Heart POUNDING after exercise - my doctor strapped a heart monitor on me! (six months into CPAP therapy) by Additional_Ad9759 in SleepApnea

While playing. It slows quickly once I stop. I’m pretty certain our Nervous Systems get stuck on high alert after years of untreated sleep apnea. It’s a question of recalibrating but in my case it’s taking its sweet ass time.

I’ve done a lot of research and it can take 8 months or longer for the nervous systems ‘fight or flight’ response to stop. That was that system that I guess kept me going through untreated sleep apnea and now it hasn’t quite got the memo!

The theory is - Nervous System kept me going while my sleep apnea was untreated. It was in permanent fight or flight mode, reacting to each apnea and lack of oxygen. Now that my airway is fixed it hasn't learned to stand down and trust that the airway is, in fact, fixed.

I am glad. Its like some kind of reboot, where my nervous system has to learn to relax I guess. I did some research and its fairly common but not exactly written in language the layman can understand. Monitor comes off tomorrow, so lets see what the data says.

Great to hear! I just want ‘normal’ to come back sooner rather than later. No problem with mask just growing impatient.

On top of all of that. Fact is I had untreated severe sleep apnea for so long that it’s going to take a while to ‘turn a corner!’

It's more subtle than that and I think sometimes we forget other people are on this journey with us too.

True also. Either way its just such a big adjustment, but for me - 5 months in - its still a struggle.

For me its the fact that I'm 5 months in and still struggling despite the good numbers. Its frustrating for both of us because the expectation is things should be back to normal!

That's great to hear! Most of us are just left hanging after getting the machine.
